PUBLIC MEETING AT WOODBURY.
A meeting of the ratepayer# pf the Woodbury district was held oh Wednesday evening last for the purpose of considering and discussing the proposal of the Geraldine County Council to borrow the sum of £SOO under the provisions of the Local Bodie# Act, 1886, for the purpose of constructing irrigation works within the Woodbury Water Supply District. Theattendance was very limited. Mr W. M.' Moore, member of the Council for the district, occupied the chair. He read the advertisement calling the meeting; also clause 35 of the Local Bodies Loans Act, and clearly explained the manner in which the money would be raised. He then stated that it simply remained for the meeting to say whether it approved of the work being done.
Those present were unanimously of opinion that the work should be carried out, and Mr J. M. Barker proposed—“ That the sum of £SOO be borrowed for the construction of the Woodbury water-race, as, proposed by the Geraldine County Council.” This was seconded by Mr J. H. Dean, and carried unanimously. The Chairman pointed out that a .poll of the ratepayers would have to be held, and the meeting decided that a Saturday would be the best day for the polling, as it would allow of all the ratepayers being present. The Chairman also pointed out that it was important that as many ratepayers as possible should record their rotes, as it would require, not only a majority of the votes polled to carry the proposal, but a majority of more than half the number of votes that it were possible to poll in the district. A vote of thanks to the Chairman for his attendance terminated the meeting.
