IRISH AFFAIRS.

London, Jan, If*. Eleven Moohlighterkf ■■ and eight prisoners charged with being concerned in political outrages bare been convicted ct Cork, and sentenced to term* of imprisonment varying f^oih'five to eighteen years.

Mr Wilfrid Blunt has resisted-the endeavors of the gabl ‘officials to 'make him wear the prison grffb.' The gaoler succeeded in removing his overcoat from the cell, and Mr Blunt declared to tbo justices who visited him that Mr A. J. Balfour, Irish Secretary, had told him that the Government intended to solve the difficulty by imprisoning' the leaders of the National party, and treating them as criminals. Already six of those now imprisoned are reported to be in ill health, and it is alleged that some of them will not survive the treatment they are subjected to in prison.

It has transpired that Mr Jasper Pyne has effected bis escape to England. Mr Pyne, who is member for East /Waterford, was charged with inciting resistance to the sheriff, and in order to prevent being arrested fortified bis residence, Lisfarny Castle, and after bolding out for some time succeeded in escaping. Dublin, Jan. 17.

A monster meeting has been held at Achill, an island'off the West coast of Ireland, County Mayo. The police were stoned by the mob, and were ordered to fire, but by the efforts of the priests, Dr Tanner, M.P., and Mr John Deary, M.P. for West Mayo, bloodshed was prevented with difficulty! Rome, Jan, 16.

The Irish Bishops, who were present at the celebration of the Papal Jubilee, have had an audience with the Pope. His Holiness exhorted them to use their influence in restoring respect for the law in Ireland, at the same time pointing out that violence would never succeed in attaining the end desired,
