GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday. Present—Messrs W. Bsl* four (Chairman), R. McKay, J. T. M. Hayhurst, and W. B. Mowell. The Engineer's reported as follows : “Rangitata-Orari Water Supply: The contract time for the completion' of con* tract No. 1 expired on November 30th, and for contracts Nos. 2 and 3 on Novem* bar 15th. Wet weather has delayed the construction of them, and we therefore recommend that six weeks’ extension of. time beyond the dates named should bo granted to compensate for that, but as the water is now much needed, we advise the Council to enforce the full amount of damages for delaying the completion be* yond the extended time. . We do not think the contracts can be fully completed fora fortnight. Should a few days wet weather set in after the water is turned on it will soon flow through all the races, but if hot dry weather should occur it will take some time for the lower reaches to become fully charged.— Seadown WaterSupply ; As instructed by the Council we have surveyed a deviation of the head race to avoid the JS.Z.M. and A. Com* pany’s land.—Protective Works and Tarring on Upper Opihi Bridge; This contract is proceeding satisfactorily. The special report on the Seadown Water* Supply was considered in Committee. MrC ( G. Tripp wrote asking that a concrete culvert be placed at Tripp's cutting.—Proposed by Mr Mackay, se* coaded by Mr Balfour—' 1 That a concrete cutting be put in near Mr Tripp’s cutting, as applied fer by him.” Mr Howell moved, and Mr Barker seconded as an amendment—" That the cutting as already made over the Rangi* tata water-race be tried before being eon* demand.”—The amendment was carried*
Tbe Geraldine Road Board wrote directing the attention of the Council to the rapid encroachment of the river Qrari immediately above and below the traffic bridge, and pointing out that ae the bridge was under the Council’s control, and tbe road was a main one, the Council shou Id take some preventive action la the matter.—The Council decided that they were not liable.
A letter was received from the Treasury stating that after March Slat no further payment would be made to local bodies under the 41 Crown and Native Lands Rating Act, 1882.” The S.O. Hospital and Charitable Aid Board’s Secretary, Mr E. H. Lough, notified that £B2B 15s Id was the amount of contributions due, pro rata, by the Council for the half-year ended March 31st.—It was decided to request the Road Beards lo pay their quotas. The following resolutions were passed ; —Proposed by Mr Howell, seconded by Mr J. T. M. Jbfayhurst; “ That the engineer be instructed to report on tbe cost of ro» pairing the Winchester Bridge on the plan suggested by him.* Proposed by Mr W. B. Howell, seconded by Mr R. Maokay; “ That the full amount of damage specified h the Rangitata waterrace contract be charged against tbs contractors.” Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr R. Mackay : “That the necessary steps be taken to corry out the Seadown water-supply, ' and tenders be called for same.” Proposed by (he Chairman, seconded by Mr Mackay: “That tbe Seadown water-supply be taken from the Opihi River, as proposed by the Connell's engineers.” Mr Howell dissented to the last resolution.
Accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
