TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

: The regular monthly meeting of the Temuka Bond Board was held on Tuesday. Present Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Hayhurst, Bisset, and Fraser. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £251 11s lOd were passed for payment. INTERVIEW. Mr A. M. Clark interviewed the Board with regard to the question of the bridge at Kolleston’s road. A long discussion ensued, and the Overseer’s report having been referred to it was found that an alternative plan suggested by him would meet the case. In view of the present financial condition of the Board, it was resolved to defer the carrying out of the work for the present. Mr Clark also asked about the bridge over the Orari. On enquiry he found that the road in question was not within the jurisdiction of the County Council. The Chairman stated that he had himself seen the Council on the subject, and suggested that the Council’s engineer should report on the matter. He further intimated that there was a probability of the Oxford-Temuka Bridge being handed over to the Council, and it was possible that some means might be taken to utilise it. If easily removable, it would lighten the cost of a bridge. 'ihe matter was deferred for farther consideration.

Sundry improvements suggested by Mr Clark to the road near Mr Whittington’s were considered reasonable, and referred to the Overseer. COKRESPONDENOI. Correspondence was received From Mr J. H. Fussell, re lease of certain land at Waitohi,—The Clerk had replied to the enquiry. From Mr J. H. Baker, re owner of section 17,266.—The Clerk had attended to the matter.

From the Property Tax Commissioner on formal matters.

From the Treasury Department, intimating that no rates would be paid on Crown and Native lands after March 31st, 1888.—Acknowledged. From the S.C. Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, forwarding claim for amount of subsidy—The payment of some was postponed for a month.

From the County Council, re bridge over Orari at Rolleston’s road,— It was intimated that the matter would be considered at a future meeting.

From the same, re the Winchester Bridge and fence approaching same. The Council thought the cost of fence too heavy.—Consideration was deferred.

From Mr H. Ward, intimating his willingness to collect birds’ eggs at Kangitata. —Acknowledged. From Mr E. Griffiths, asking for a plank to be • placed across Cooper’s Greek for the convenience of children attending school.—The work was considered unnecessary. From Harper and Co., re an outstanding account pf £l7 ss. The Clerk explained that' the account

in question wa* one due by the Geral. dine Road Board which had been rendered in error.—The Clerk to enquire.

From Mr V. Miller, 0.E., intimating his willingness to undertake any consulting work, —Letter received. From Mr Henry Coulter, asking for Mr James Austin’s name to be substituted for his with regard to section B 4 Rangitata. —Agreed to, pending Mr Austin’s consent.

From Mr D. Brown, teacher at South Orari School, applying for some alteration to the road near the school, and also for a plank over the creek.—The Board could not consider the request.

From the Mount Peel Road Board, re Californian-thistle.—The Clerk was instructed to advise the Mackenzie Council and also Mr Russell ot the presence of the Californian thistle in the district.

A letter signed “ A Ratepayer ” was not considered. overseer’s report.

The Overseer’s report was read and considered:— “To the Chairman and Members. “ Gentlemen, — I have tha honor to report for the past month as follows : As directed, I have invited tenders for the erection of a concrete culvert near Mr Parkes’s. Tenders have not been invited for tha work applied for by Mr Snell as I have arranged with him to let it stand over until after harvest.— Contract No, 18, forming part of road, Educational Reserve 1400, has been completed and passed for payment.—Contracts 17, 23, and 24 are nearly completed, the cheques being drawn, to be held till the works are passed.—The contractor for enlarging the Canal drain has been making very little progress during the last two weeks.—The bridge by Gteen Hayes has been redecked and four extra girders have been put in.—The work authorised to relieve Mr Galbraith’s land of storm water is being done, and other small jobs have been attended to. — B* Mr McNiven’s application. I do not consider it necessary at present to form the road referred to in Mr McNiven’a letter. Provision could be made to let off storm water at a small cost.—Rs Mr LeCren’s letter. I have made a rough plan of the ground where the work referred to by Mr LeCren has been done, from which you will be able to judge as to the advisability of doing what he suggests, —The water-tables of the Main South Road at Winchester require cleaning.—l am, etc.,

“F. Archer, “ Overseer,” The fallowing resolutions were made thereon:— The water-tables at Winchester to be cleared out.

Mr LeCren’s suggestion was considered, and it was decided that the Board could not move further in the matter at present. RATES. It was resolved to sue for all rates unpaid after the Ist February. TENDERS. Three tenders were received for contract No. 25, that of T. Corkery (£35) being accepted. THE SPARROW PEST. It was decided to discontinue paying for birds’ eggs and heads after Saturday, 14th. The Board then adjourned.
