IRISH AFFAIRS.
Dublin, Jan. 8.
Mr Timothy Harrington, M.P., hks been sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment for publishing reports of meetings of the League. The decision will be appealed against, London, Jan. 7.
Arabi Pasha has written to Mr Wilfred Blunt (who defended him at his trial for rebellion in Egypt in December 1882), sympathising with him on his imprisonment for being concerned in the Nationalist meeting at Woodford,
Jan. 8.
Mr W. J. Lane, M.P. for Cork, has jnst been arrested on a charge of intimidating, In consequence of the appeal of Mr Wilfred Blunt being disallowed the shops in Portumna, County Galway, where the appeal was heard, have been closed and hung with crape. Dr Tanner, M.P., prevented a collision between the populace and police, urging the former to boycott the latter instead. A large gathering of Nationalists was held at Dromore, County Down. The proceedings were quiet and orderly. During the hearing ot Mr Blunt’s appeal at Portumna, the police charged the crowd, many of whom sustained injuries.
