Lord Randolph Churchill was on the point of re-entering the Cabinet when he renewed his demands for the expulsion from the Ministry of Viscount Cross and the promotion of Mr W. H. Smith. The Marquis of Salisbury refused to agree to the proposed course, and it is thought that the object of Lord Randolph Churchill's visit to Russia is with the view of embarrassing the Marquis of Salisbury. At a largely attended banquet given by colonists, Mr Justin McCarthy stated that the Earl of Carnarvon has ac.cg»pte.d-'Mj ParneJl's scheme of Home Rulo for Ireland. The M arquis of Salisbury said that the Earl of Carnarvon was at present absent in Australia, but until the statement was justified lie would be convinced that it was without foundation. Mr McCarthy replied that the Earl of Carnarvon was a man of honor and would certainly not disclaim the statement,
Mr Raikes, Postmaster-General insists that be is entitled to include parcels nnder the mail contract, and he refuses to give way. The companies declare that neither in the original tender or the parleying which took place was anything implied that parcels should be carried. They dispute the legality of Mr Raikes' proposal and refuse to accept what they term a new and i dangerous obligation at the last moment. Rothschild and Song deny tbey are connected with any syndicate established for the maintenance of the price of copper. The Right Rev, J. Moore, Bishop of Baliarat, has had a private audience with the Pope, when be presented the address from the Catholics resident in Victoria. Accompanying the address were 1000 Ballnrat sovereigns, quanz specimens, and silver groups representing the Australian flora, and fauna, and aboriginal life. His Holiness in reply said he was pleased at the progress of religion in Baliarat, and commended their generosity in support of religion, education, and offeringa to the Pontiff.

The torpedo cruiser Mohawk is being prepared for commission to the Australian station.
News has been received from Massowah that Mr Portal, first secretary to tbe British diplomatic Agency at Cairo, who was charged by tbe Imperial Gflvernment to act as one of the mediators between tbe Abyssinians and Italians, has returned to Massowab. Mr Portal reports that he was accorded a friendly reception, but the Abyssinians could not be prevailed upon to sue for peace, Ras Alulu, the Abyssinian general, having interposed hindrances to Mr Portal's mission. Dec. 26. A general strike has been ordered of tbe employees on tbe PhiladelphiaReading Railway in consequence of the owner* employing non-nnionists. The strike will affect sixty-five thousand men. A manifesto baß been issued by the newly formed Welsh Land League, which is modelled upon similar lines to the Irish League. Sir George F. Bowen has written a letter to the Times in which he deprecates Western Australia being given to a handful of immigrants. He advoeates the adoption of Wakefield's system, and in the event of responsible government being granted to Western Australia, that a large portion of the land revenue should be devoted towards promoting emigration.
A proposal to open the Manchester Library and Art Gallery on Sundays has met with the approval of the Bishop of Manchester and the Bishop of Salford.
The Biil which the Earl of Dunraven is preparing enables members of the House of Lords to be members of the House of Commons, but they will abandon their right to sit in the House of Lords while retaining their seats in the House of Commons. The death is announced of Captnin Betice, of the bhaw, Saville and Albion Company's steamer Coptic, which recently arrived in England from New Zealand. Captain Bence died shortly after the Coptic left Wellington.

report which has been recently circulated that his mission to Russia is of a political character, King David Kalakaus of the Sandwich Islands hos vetoed the Bill abolishing Governors of the Islands. The Natives arc siding with the King, and it is feared that a revolution will take place. The Daily Telepraph protests against Western Australia being grunted responsible government, and suggests that the Irish peasantry should be emigrated there. There is a movement on foot in Paris to force the Government to repress the syndicate formed for maintaining the price of copper. San Francisco, Dec. 24. Sailed—Arawa for New Zealand. St. Petersburg, Dec. 25. Lord and Lady Randolph Churchil arrived here yesterday from Berlin, His Lordship had an interview with M. de Geirs yesterday, and he will be accorded en audience by His Majesty the Czar to-day. The Russian Press generally, in commenting upon the visit of Lord Randolph Churchill, expresses the belief that the cordial reception which His | Lordship has been accorded in St. Petersburg will favorably influence the relations between England and Russia. Berlin, Dec. 26. Advices from San Remo stats that Sir Morrell Mackenzie returned to that place and made » critical examination l of the Crown Prince. Dr Mackenzie expressed himself greatly pleased with the improvement in the health of His Highness. He reports that on!y a slight swelling now remains. Referring to the nature of the ailment, Sir Morrell Mackenzie states that time alone can determine the character of the disease. Paris, Dec. 26. Ihe Journal des Debats, in an article referring to the Npw Hebrides, steles that, though no orders have yet been given, the evacuation of the islands by France is imminent,
