ALLEGED CURE FOR DIPHTHERIA.

Id n letter recently published in the ! Illawarra Mercury fromMrGeorge Osborne | that gentleman deßcribes un alleged cure for diphtheria ; "A bricklayer ii my | employ at the public school buildings, i Charcoal, lost his eldest child owing to diphtheria. Another child in the same family became very seriously ill, and although under skilful treatment the disease had spread so rapidly that no hope was entertained of its recovery. A few days ago, while the father of the child was slacking lime in my presence he was describing to me the suffering his poor child had to endure, especially when brushing the throat; and a suggestion accidentally occurred to me that if it were possible to have the patient held over the Bteam ascanding from the lime while under th& process of slacking probably good results might be produced. The father, anxious to do anything to save the child's life, adopted the suggestion, and took a lump of unslacked atone lime to his residence, put it into a basin, slacked it in the bedroom with boiling water, and held the child over the steam to inhale as much as possible until it got into a state of perspiration, after which, when it felt thirsty, he gave it a drink of limewater. It immediately discharged from the mouth a qnaniry of matter obstructing the throat, and in a few hours partook of a heavy meal and slept during the J night, and has now quite recovered. No doubt the medical profession will poohpooh such rn idea, and attribute the recovery to some other cause. Be that us it may, here is a case in point, and Ul the argument or language in the English tongue will not convince your humble servant or the parents of the child that any oilier remedy than the above-stated saved its life."
