TOTARA.

The Totara School broke up for the holidays on Wednesday last, andjthe prizes were distributed by the Rev. Mr White as follows:—Standard VI., Agnes Balfour; Standard 111., Robert Robertson. Standard 11., Wm. Aitken 1, Annie Campbell 2. Infants, Magaret Aitken 1, Jessie Campbell 2. Rewards for diligence and perseverance were also given to Jeannie Campbell, j ameß Balfour and Margaret Shaw ; for recitation to Elizabeth Campbell; neat exercise book, William J. Aitken ; and for regular attendance, John Campbell. Advantage was taken of the occasion to present prizes to the children attending Sunday School, Margaret Balfour taking first place in the senior division, and Catherine J. Balfour in the junior division. The Rev. Mr'White addressed the parents and children, and recitations were given by Mieses Margaret Aitken and Elizabeth Campbell and Master R. Robertson, and a couple of songs were nicely rendered by the school children. A vote of thanks was accorded to Miss Callender for the sjccessful conduct of the school, and also to the ladies who provided the tea. A number of games were indulged in during the afternoon.

Mr W. S. Thompson, better known as " Zalu " Thompson, of panorama fame, died at Wellington on Monday night. He had been dying for some time from diabetes. McKenzie and Roff's sawmill, Seaward Bubli, near Invercargill (the property of the Dunedin Iron and Woodware Co,) was down on Saturday night.
