A processionist, named Harrison, bas been sentenced to five years’ penal servitude for stabbing a policeman at Westminster on November 13th,
The promoters of Lionell’s funeral, in accordance with an order from Sir Charles Warren, chief of the police, decided not to approach Trafalgar square, The Italian budget shows a deficit of 133,000,000 franca. The German Reichstag has finally' passed the Corn Duties Bill, Tha manager of the Opera Oomique, Paris, destroyed by fire on the 25th May last, has been found guilty of negligence, and sentenced to three ( months’ imprisonment, and ordered to compensate the relatives of the victims of the catastrophe. Parliament meets on February 9lb.
In the appeal case Commissioner of Victorian Railways?. Coultas, judgment was reserved. In the case of Dibbs ?. the Bank of New Sontb Wales the appeal was allowed with costs. Bank, of Now South Wales v. Dibbs was dismissed with costs, The decision declares that the Bank is only entitled to charge 5 per cent on advances, and is not entitled to charge commission on tbe two million loan registered by the Bank of England, also (bat tbe Government are entitled to a set-off of oneeighth per cent on £1,290,000 transferred from London to Sydney. The judgment further stated that tbe sudden termination of the contract between tbe Government and tbe Bank would have produced the utmost confusion in the finances of tbe colony, which the contract seems carefully to guard against. Tbe Daily News to-day announces Sir J. B. Tboreton, Governor-elect of Fiji, will introduce into those islands new industries, including mills for extraction of cocoanut oil, for making cocoanut matting, and fruit canning.
A tin case has been found on the Cornish coast containing a letter, stating that the barque Helen, from Hobart, was sinking in the Bay of Biscay. The Helen has not been spoken since she passed Portland. She was commanded by Oapt, Boon, The New Zealand Shipping Company’s Aorangi left Plymouth yesterday for Wellington, via Madeira, Capetown, and Hobart.
The death is announced of the Rev. A. H. Mackonochie, against whom, in 1883, sentence of deprivation was pronounced for the illegalities of Romish ceremonies practised by him whilst incumbent at bt. Albans. Dec. 19. The Marquis of Salisbury, speaking at Derby, did not consider that the diplomatic news pointed to an immediate European war, although be believed hostilities would commence without any warning. For this reason it was necessary that England should make all needfni preparations. His Lordship vigorously condemned the Protection movement, which he declared could only result in civil war. Sir Thomas Fraser Groves, Liberal Unionist member for Wilton, South Wilts* has become a Gladstonian. It is reported that Osman Digna, at the bead of ten thousand men, threatens Suakim, The Egyptian Government are sending reinforcements to tW town.
Mr Yautm denies having given an estimate of value of Pritchard Morgan's find, as alleged by the Times. Dec. 20.
Mr John Hooper, M.P. for Southeast County Cork, and alderman of Cork, 1 who was recently arrested for publishing in the Cotk Herald reports of meetings of suppressed branches of the National League, was brought before the court yesterday, and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. Cailan and Harkins, the suspected dynamite plotters, were charged on nmand at the Bow S’reet Police Cour^
yesterday with having dynamite in their possession, and with plotting explosions. The evidence for the prosecution was continued, and on its conclusion both the accused were committed for trial,

Actions have been instituted against Messrs Gillespie, Aitken, Scotl and Go., of Melbourne, and Messrs-Hickman and Co., of Echuca, by the Commissioner of Customs in connection with the importation of a quantity of roller milling machinery, which was grossly undervalued with tbe object of defrauding the revenue. Messrs Gillespie, Aitken, Scott and Co. were fined £ISOO, aad Messrs Rickman and Co. £750, although tbs Commissioner blamed the English consignors, and acquitted tbe local firms of any intention of defrauding. Sydney, Dec, 19. A miner named William Morgan, chose wife and family art said to be residing in New Zealand, was killed at I Bnrwood Colliery, Dec. 20. An outbreak of smallpox reported to have occurred at Rock has been proved to be merely a case of chicken pox.
