COMMERCIAL.
CHRISTOHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addiogton yards on Wednesday, heavy entries of nil descriptions of stock were yarded for the duy's supply. Fat Cattle—A large supply, quality varied, but principally good, several lines of Christmos cattle being offered. The demand was fairly well sustained, very few lines being passed unsold ; values about equal to last week. The top pries for bullocks for the day was for a grand steer, £lO 10s, A grand heifer realised £lO 15b* A line of heifers offered on account of Mr J. Fergasson, ranged from £6 5s to £8 16s; steers, on account same vendor, £7 5s to £9 15s per head. Other lines of steers sold at from £5 10s to £6 12s fid ; heifers £4 8s to £5 ss, being at from 15s to 188 per hundred lb, according to quality. Store Cattle—A moderate entry, all descriptions represented, enquiry fairly good, values show little or no alteration. A line of 23 yearlings sold at from 22s to 30s, line of two-year-old heifers at from 36s to 57s 6d, two-and-half-year-old steers £3 to £3 15s 6d,
Dairy stock—Good cows near calving sold at from £4 10s to £6 5b per head; tecond rate serts 50s to 60s.
Fat Sheep—A heavy entry yarded, quality varied, seoond rate predominating, Crossbred wethers sold at from 8b to 10s 9d, light weights 7s to Bs, crossbred ewes 6s 6d to 8s 9d, being up to about lfd per lb. Fat Lsmbs—A very heavy entry; the demand fairly good. Primest sorts sold st from 7s 6d to 8s 6d per bead, medium 5s to 6s, inferior 3s 9d to 4s 6d. Messrs Mat son and Co. sold for Mr Buddenklau, 149 crossbred wethers from 7s 9d to 8s 6d. Messrs Miles and Co, scld for the Levels Estate 182 crossbred ewes at 6s 9d, The Loan and Mercantile Agency Company sold for Mr A. M, Clark 154 crossbred wethers at 10s to 10s 7d, cull pen at 8s lid, 122 ewes at 6s 6d and 7s sd, lhe National Mortgage and Agency Company sold for the Pareora Estate cros&bred ewes at from 6s 7d to 6s 9d each, Pigs—A fairly good entry. Demand good. "Werners sold at 10* each, small stores 12s to I4i, strong stores 15s to 18s, porkers 20s to 265. DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : "Wheat—The consumption is not extensive, but best descriptions of provincial grown, such as really good white velvet and tuscan, continue to find a ready sale at full rates; whilst good medium descriptions also maintain their value. For inferior qualities, however, there is very little enquiry, and sales are difficult to effect, even at a reduction on the recent moderate quotations. Northern descriptions are below the average in quality, and do not meet with much favour.. Quotations are: For prime milling velvet and tuscan, 3s 9d to 3s lOd; medium to good, 3s 5d to 3s 8d; fowls' wheat and inferior, 2s 6d to 3s 3d (ex store). Oats—There has been a little more enquiry for shipment this week, and a few sales have been effected. There are few coming forward, and as it is almost a certainty that there are not very many to come prices are more likely to harden than otherwise. For stout, bright milling Is 8d to Is B|d; short bright feed, Is 7sd tols8d; medium and sparrowbills, la 7d to Is 7|d; inferior and long oats, Is 4d to Is 6?d (ex store). Barley—ln the absence of supplies there is nothing of consequence passing. Quotations nominal.
Sheepskins—On Monday country dry crossbreds, low to medium, brought Is 2d to 3s 6d; do do merino, Is Id to 3s 3d; dry pelts, 4d to 9d; green do., 9d to lid; butchers' green crossbreds, small and inferior to medium, 2s 8d to 4s 3d; good to prime heavy-woolled skins, 4s 6d to 5s 8d; "green merinos, 3s 6d to 4s; lambskins, 14d to 16d. Hides—Prices are as follow :- For inferior and bulls', l£d to 2d; light, 2id to 2£d; medium, 3d to 3|d; heavy, free from cuts and offal, 3|d to 3f d per lb. Tallow—The continued firm tone of the London market is gradually hardening prices locally. Inferior and mixed, 10s to 14s; medium, 14b 6d to 16s 6d; prime mutton, 17s to 18s; rough fat—inferior, 5s to 7s ; medium to good, 8s to 10s; best caul fat, 10s to lis per cwt.
DUNEDIK STOCK MAKKETS. At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted :—- Eat Cattle—2l9 were yarded for to-day's requirements, consisting from good to prime quality. Prices were a shade beneath last week's. Best bullocks brought £7 5s to £lO 7s 6d; ordinary to good, £3 15s to £6 15s; cows in proportion. —Eeid, Maclean and Co. sold for Mr Andrew Grant (Temuka), 6 prime bullocks from £8 6s to £9 2b 6d. Wright Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr Andrew Grant (Temuka), 8 prime bullocks at from £9 15s to, £8 10s. Fat Sheep—2o6s were penned—all crossbreda, consisting of mixed qualities with the exception of one or two pens; the whole were shorn. Competition at the commencement was slack, but towards the end prices showed a slight advance on last week's sales. Best crossbreds (shorn), brought 9b to 10a 6d; ordinary, 6s 9d to 8s; best crossbred ewes (shorn), 7s 6d to 9s 3d j extra heavy, 18a 3d;
ordinary, 5s 9d to 7s.—Eeid, Maclean and Co. sold for Mr William Grant (Elloughton Grange), 67 prime crossbred ewes at 9a ; for Waimate Estate, 117 crossbred ewes at from 7b 6d to 8s 9d. Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr F. M. Eickman (Waimate), 17 Southdown wethers at 12s, and 23 crossbred wethers at 10s 3d; for the N.Z. and A.L. Co. (Pareora), 76 crossbred ewes at from 9s to 8s 6d; for Messrs E. Price and Son (Waimate), 140 half bred wethers (half fat) at from 7s 9d to 7s 3d; for Mr Andrew Mowat (Waimate), 26 crossbred hoggets, at lis 6d. Fat Lambs—lo2B were penned. Bidding was fairly brisk for good quality; inferior and small were taken up for grazing purposes. Priceß ranged from 4s to 9s; one pen at 10s 6d.—Wright Stephenson and Co. sold" for Mr Andrew Mowat (Waimate), 12 at from 8s 9d to 9s, and 34 at 6s 6d; for Mr P. M. Eickman (Waimate), 44 at from 5s 9d to 5s 3d. Pigs Sixty-six penned to-day—-mostly stores and suckers, and very few bacon pigs. Suckers brought 7s 9d to 14s 9d; stores, 17s to 235; porkers, 21b 6d to 80s; baconers, up to 50s. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Melbournb, Dec. 15. The wool sales of Messrs Goldsborough and Company, Limited, continue to be largely attended, and animated competition prevails for the various lots submitted. Good greasy sells up to lid per lb, good scoured up to 16d, superior washed wool up to 19d. Light condition wool and crossbreds meet with good general demand. 4800 bales are reported to hare been sold by the firm during the week. ENGLISH MARKETS. Loudon, Deo. 14. Scotch pig iron is quoted at 43s Id. A cargo of colonial wheat, off coast, has been placed at 34s per quarter.
