ARRIVAL OF THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL.
The Zealaudia with the San Francisco Mails arrived at Auckland at 5 a.m. on Saturday last, having left San Francisco «n Nov. 19th. GENERAL SUMMARY. Alterations are mooted in the San Francisco mail service which if carried oat will expedite the delivery of the mail by five days. General Valentine Baker died in London on Nov 17th. He was fifty two years old.

The Hancock Chemical Company’s packing-house for dynamite was blown up on November 16th. Six men were annihilated with the buildings.
A deal of surprise has been shown at Sir Charles Dilke’s behaviour. He had been offered the candidature of Chelsea and several other more or less safe seats, but declined all. He is not discouraged at the inquiry, but is promoting it. a collection of letters has come into his hands, which those that have inspected them declare furnish absolute disproof of Mrs Crawford’s story. A force of 40 engineers and 100 laborers left New York for Greytown, Nicaragua, on November 1, to complete the location of the inter-oceanic canal and prepare for the work of construction.
