The following private telegram has been received in Christchurch, and shows the state of the London wheat market New Zealand fair average quality wheat, ex granary, 32s 6d per 4961 b. Market has an upward tendency. The libel action Hornsby, the late editor of the Napier Evening News, agsinsttholate proprietors of (hat paper, has been settled by the publication of ample apologies in Uio News and Herald, and payment of £IOO and all expenses incurred by Hornsby up to the time of settlement. AUd named Wm. Adams, who was injured by being jammed between the buffers of the railway trucks at letene, Wellington, on Monday, has died from his injuries. Csmmiasioner Howard, of the Salvation Army, states that-officers will shortly be told oS for duty among the natives. At the half-yearly meeting of tho National Insurance Company the report, declaring a dividend of 10 per cent,, was adopted. Letters have been received from the principal exhibitors at the Adelaide Exhibition expressing their willingness to send exhibits to Dunedin if an Exhibition is held next year. In the lovercarcill District Court on Wednesday, a lad named Humphreys was found guilty of uo'awfnlly wounding a Japanese in the streets of Invercargill on a recent Saturday night by stabbing him with a knife. The conviction in this and recent cases of street and rowdyism by youth?, which is becoming very common, has given general sat sfaction. Martin Johnson, who threatened to shoot a constable who went to his farm to distrain for Waimea Railway rates, and who previously informed Sir R. Stout that he would shoot anyone who attempted to icize his property for rates, was found guilty ®E attempting to do grievous bodily harm. On Thursday Humphreys was sentenced to 12 months on probation and ordered to,find £IOO security, and J ohnson got 12 months' bard labor.
