ACCIDENTS.
At Masterlon last Friday two men named Jae. Walls and Th'oa. Qpoghan were working in a cutting on a ledge, about 6 feet wide and 30 feet high. , They pnt in a charge, but the fine would not work, so they slit the end and applied a light, when the fuse spluttered and sent a spark into the keg .standing between them, An explosion followed. Luckily they were blown towards the face, otherwise they would have been dashed to pieces on the rocks below. They were brought to the Masterton Hospital in the afternoon, but the extent of their injuries cannot ho ascertained owing to the skin being puffed up, but lh y are considerably burned about the chest and arms ; the whole of the hair was burnt off their heads. Tho hospital doctor thinks tho burns are only superficial. At the Glenham (Southland), tunnel on the Edendale-Fortrose railway, five men named Michael Gilhooley, John Garvey, Wra. Newall, John Richards, and ffm, Mahoney, were buried by a fail of earth , caused by the tunnel aubaiding on, Saturday lact. Gilhooly and Garvey we'o dug , out alive and taken to the Invercargill Hoipital. Tho dead bodies of Richard*, Maloney, aad Newall have been found. It is understood that all the men are married and have families. The inquest on the bodies of the men killed by a fall of earth at Glenham tunnel was continued until ten o’clock on Saturday night, when it was adjourned for a week, the jury desiring to have expert evidence as to the sufficiency of tho timbering of the excavation, which gave way undei the pressure of the slip of soil. ,
