CHRISTCHURCH A. AND P. SHOW.
The Agricultural Show opened in the new show grounds at Christchurch on Wednesday. There was a fine display in ail the classes—some good stock, and a large and excellent display of implements and machinery. The chief prize-takers in the classes given are as under; —Merino sheep, fine combings, Messrs W«tson and Sherman (Warren estate;, and Messrs Mallock and Lance; strong combing, Messrs A. A, and R. McMaster, Mr W. 0. Nicholls, Messrs H. Wharton and Company, and Mr Rutherford ; English Leicesters, Mr P. 0, Threlkeld, Mr J, Bonifant, Mr Hayden ; Border Leiceaters, Messrs H. R. and J. E. Parker, Hon. M. Holmes; ditto housed and clothed, New Zealand and Australian Land Company ; Lincolns, Mr 0. Witholq Mr W. Harris, Hon. M. Holmes, and Mr T. Paehty ; ditto housed and clothed, Now Zealand and Australian Land Company, Hon* M. Holmes ; Romney Marsh, Mr John Reid ; Cotswold, Mr William Boag ; Soutbdowns, Mr H. J. Waslibburne, Mr J, Deans, Mr S. Garforth, Mr P. C. Threlkeld ; Shropshire Downs, Mr J. Gregg ; Hampshire Downs, Mr Fnedlander ; fat sheep, M.r D. Garforth, Mr L. White, and Mr E. D’Auvergne. In shorthorn caltle Mr E, Meniovegot first prize for best bull of any age, and for three-year-old bull ; Mr J. Reed got first prize for two-year-old and youiling bulls ; Mr J. Deans for bull calves ; Mr j. Reid for best cow or heifer, Mr J. Deans for best milch cow and throe-year-old heifer. In Herefords Mr A. M, Clark took the first prize for best bull of any age, and first for cow or heifer of any age, in milk or calf, same breed, la draught horses Mr John McKollar’s Victor took first prize for best entire, and Mr W. Moore’s Early Morning second. Mr John Small’s Vanquisher was first among the three-year-old entires,, and Mr • W. Hoag's Chief of the Cl«n among the two-year olds. Mir Bbag’s Flora McDonald took first prize as best mare in foal or with foal at foot and; Mr. .fames Austin’* Princess
Royal took first and special prizes as best 1 hree-yesr-old filly. Mr John Boag’s Marchioness 11. took first prize as the beat dry mare. Id the New Zealand Manufactures and produce, Mr 1. Maxwell, of Timaru, for saddles with furniture, and saddlery and harness, obtained special mention. The same exhibitor obtained first prize for a set of cart harness (leading and shaft), his spring padded collars, porlinanteaux and bags. Mr P. McCaskill or Winchester, obtained first prize for his exhibit of scoured merino wool and second prize for an exhibit of scoured half bred. B. Hale and Co.’s exhibits of ropes and twines were highly commended. The Timaru Milling Company’s (J. B. Rutland, Manager), samples of flour and grain and grsss seed were very highly commended.
