Present— Messrs H. M. Miles (Chairman), G. Lynch, A. Russell, J.Davie,.A. W.-Burridge, W. G. Rutland, and E. Brown, The Chairman stated he had convened the meeting to consider the advisability of purchasing the prizes frem the N.Z. Bible Track and Ikok Society, whose repi-esefititive whs then in town with a supply of work". Mi* A. Ruessll proposed, and it. was aeconded by Mr Lynch—" Thsfc the Chairman, Mr Rutland, and the Hsad Miiofcor be appointed to procure prizes up to I lie value of £lO for distribution at the end of the year.'* As an amendment, Mr A. Laurie, who ia well known in Sooth Canterbury as a professional pedestrian, and who has gained some notoriety on tha West Coast as a boxer, and J, Jones, a recent arrival from Sydney. The stakes were £2O a side. Some local amateurs amused the audience fer an hour, and then Jones and Linrie stepped into the ring. Mb Rtjskih.—The London correspondent of the Melbourne Telegraph, writing on Oat. 18th, says:—" I have seen private letters to friends of Mr John Buskin, who was recently reported to be deranged, whioh show that his intellect ia clear and vigorous. His general health is also muoh improved. Tillage gessips exaggerate his ailment. He was suffering from brain fever, but having recovered, he is now staying at Folkestone. Mr Buskin has just published a letter in the paper ß ,, in which he treats of railways and other works of civilisation. He is also discharging a volume of letters among his friend*. He is busy in preparing au autobiography, and also a new edition of his former books." The Temoka Rifles.—Yesterday being the Prince of Wales' Birthday, the Temuka Rifles, to the Dumber of thirty, assembled at the drillshed, under com* , mand of Captain Hayhurst and Lieuts. Findlay and White, and held a parade. Such members of the corps as had not finished class-tiring then proceeded' to the range under the command of Lieut. Findlay. About fifteen attended at the ' rifle range, and most of them finished class-firing. There was a; strong' breese 1 across the range, and the day was not favorable to good scoring, but notwith* withstanding this some of them totalled 9 ' up long numbers; The Salvation Armt.—The Temuka and Timaru corps of the Salvation Army held a monster picnic in the Victoria Park yesterday. About 100 of the Timaru i corps, under the command of Captain ' Rawlins and Lieutenant Devereaux, and • accompanied ,by the Salvation Army • Brass Bind, arrived in Temuka in «• > presses at about 10 a.m., and marched to , the barracks, up the Main Street, and down to Victoria Park, where they commenced to .indulge in various games. I During the day a large number of tye* 1 general public dropped in, and in ' afternoon there must have been about 1 300 persons present. Mr Charteris had a 1 refreshment stall there on behalf of the army, and supplied the wants of those who needed light refreshments.
