Corbett, The first annual athletic sports gathering under the auspices of this Club took place in the Woodbury Domain yesterday, and must decidedly be set down as an entire success. Notwithstanding the ominous appearance of the weather on Tuesday, Wednesday morning broke as clear and bright as could be 'wished for. Throughout the day a beautiful sun' shone overhead, the too oppressive heat of its rays being pleasantly tempered by a cool sou'-west breeze The attendance was very fair, a very large proportion being ladies. In spite of the wet of the previous day, the shingly nature of the park had absorbed the moisture, and the ground was dry enough for people to sit down on without discomfort. The various officials fulfilled their duties to the satisfaction of all. The starting of Mr Corbett was favorably commented on by the competitors, while Mr Macdonald performed the not very onerous duties of judge in an efficient manner. The course was 220 yards in circumference, and considerably on the rough side. The first event on the programme was the 100yds. Flat Racb—First prize, £1; aecond, 10s. J. Kalaugher (syds) ... .. 1 F. The field were sentjnway to an excellent start and finished in a cluster, the rhree placed men,being nil in a bunch. Running Long Jump—Fir«t prize, £1; second, 10s. J. H. Clinch (18ft) 1 T. Kalaugher ran a good race throughout, winning, easily. Clinch, the scratch man, also ran a good race, but the handicap was too heavy for him. 100yds. J. A. BUsset (scratch) ... ... I H. Heatley (60yda) ... ....2 The four on the card started for this event. Ross and Godwin, however, soon fall out, and left the race to the two placed men. A capital match resulted, both men being heartily encouraged by their respective admirers.
