CONCERT AT TEMUKA.

On Tuesday evening last & concert in aid of the prize fund of the St. Saviour's Sunday School was given in the Oddfellows' Hall. The weather jyas threatening, and the roads muddy in consequence of the rain that had fallen during the previous two days Still the hall was comfortably filled, and a considerable sum was realised for the object aimed at. The overtures, " Qui Vive" and "Coronation March," were nicely played by the Mines Hill, of Timaru, and evoked considerable applause. Miss Lee contributed two songs, "The Stranger" unci "The Brookiide" (her sister,Miss A., Lee, accompanying), the applause ;»he gained being well deserved. In ; jthe latter, a very old favorite, she was ■■ veiy successful. Mr Goldsmith (of Timaru) gave " Too Late " and " Sail- , ing." Both songs were splendidly fiyen, and should have been encored, liss A. Erwood sang "Bosalie, the Prairie Mower" and "The Vacant >: Ohiir," and L-mi applauded. Masters \JBplton, "Fenton, and Wills gave a skg and chorus in the first part, Good Ship's Sailing," and , Masters Penton, Bolton, Lee, and \ Wills a similar piece, " Ring the Bell •<:. Watchman," in the second part, the .y latter being the most successful. Miss Eowe's laughter-provoking recitations "Ask Mamma!" and " Ask ; ; Papa!" were given in a perfect V manner, and her hearers were delighted. Every word was enunciated clearly and distinctly, and her gestures and actions were appropriate. Vociferous applause greeted both her efforts. In the first part Mr Cooke gave two comic songs, "Are you there Moriarity?'' and " Patriek mind the Baby " (encore), Mr Flint acting as accompanist. Both were given! with spirit, and drew forth '' " roars of laughter. In the second part . Mr Cooke gave a couple of recitations in character, and was again successful in pleasing the audience. Misß E. Pilbrowgavea charming little song, " TTnbidden," which was much appreciated. This yeung lady has a voice of great promise. A touching recitation, ««A , Winter's Tale," by Miss Annie Voyce, was listened to with ■' strained attention, and merited,all the applause it rceeived. Miss Neville gave " Maiden in the Greenwood" very nicely, and Miss Ladbrooke delighted cthe audience with her rendition of . "The Miller and the Maid," and f< narrowly escaped an encore. Mr •Early was in fine voice and did full ?* justice to the song " The Showman," for which he was encored. Mr Cleghome, contributed a song and was applauded. An instrumental trio by Miss Bayner (piano), and Messrs Langridge (violin) and Eayner (flute) concluded the first part, and a duet ■ (violin) by Messrs Horseman and •Langridge terminated the second. .The accompaniments, with the exception of those mentioned, were nicely .';•". placed by Miss E. Lee. At the conclusion of the programme the Rev, T. A. Hamilton made a few remarks, lii: ihwhick he said he thought it only right for the audience to express their :- thanks to Mr Gaze who had organised •the concert while he (the speaker) * was in Christchurch. He thought then* thanks were also due to the .-> Timaru performers, to Miss Lee, who :nr had taken nearly all the accompani- : -nients, and to all the performers for their kind services, He hoped the : concert- would be the forerunner of ...: future gatherings of the kind. The .first verse of the "National Anthem " was then sung, and the audience ;:," 4isp«rßid.
