FOUR PERSONS BURNT TO DEATH.
Edward and Jane Sutton, husband and wife, Christopher Elliott, and Edward Ure, were burnt to-death in a sod hut belonging to Sutton, at Deep Stream, on the Otago Central line, on Sunday morning. It appears that all bad been drinking. The hut was discovered to be on fire by a laborer at 4 o’clock. He was awakened by an explosion which he believed to have been caused by dynamite cartridges. When be got up the place was all ablaze, and the bodies were found in the ruin j . lire and Mrs Sutton were apparently suffocated by the smoke, but Sutton and Elliott had, it would seem, made an attempt to escape, as the bodies were found just on the door step. The bodies were fearfully disfigured. The Buttons had no children, Elliott was a stonemason, and his wife and family are in Southland. Ura was unmarried. At the inquest a verdict was given of accidentally burnt to death.
