Daring the last voyage of the s.s. WairarspA, from ihe south to Auckland, fireman Thomas Quieten was assaulted by the third engineer. Alex. Ramsay, vrbo struck him on the bead with a shovel, inflicting a fearful wound. The assault is said to have arisen out of a dispute respecting work. Arthur Marshall, storeman to McMillan and Hunt, of Awaburi, near Feilding, hanged himself on Sunday night, or early on Monday morning. No cause has y<H been assigned, An inquest will be held to-morrow. A man named Joseph William Jones, residing at Aramoho, near Wanganui was arrested on Monday on a charge of criminally assaulting a girl ten years of age. Prisoner is a married man with a family. O’Brien, a Wellington wife deserter, who absconded to Sydney, was brought back on Monday in the Ilauroto. A man named Edward Bassett dropped dead in his garden at Hokitika on hunday, having broken a blood vessel. He bad been in delicate health for some time.
