London, Oct. 25. The French Press is pleased at the result of the negotiations with reference to the New Hebrides, and declares that the new convention regarding the Suez Canal involves the early evacuation of Egypt and the abrogation of the old convention. The annexation of the Leeward Islands will receive sanction when the New Hebrides are evacuated. Later, It is stated that Prance will have the Island of Raiatea as compensation for the New Hebrides, and not the Leeward Island of the latter group, as previously reported. Oct. 26. In the Anglo-French Convention regarding the New Hebrides no mention is made of the recidivistes question, but it is understood that the assurances on the subject given by the French Govern, ment in October 1885 will be fully maintained. The Marquis of Salisbury, in a despatch to Mr S. Egerton, Secretary to British Legation at Paris, limits the recognition of the annexation of Rtiatea by France, It is feared in Berlin that the settlement of the negotiations regarding the New Hebrides and the Baez Canal Convention will cause England and France to coalesce.
