Trouble is pending between the Otago Education Board and the Katkorai School Committee. The Board gave Mr McLauchlan, head master of the school, notice of dismissal without consulting the Committee, and the latter body claim that the action of the Board is unjust and arbitrary, and in direct opposition to the provisions and intentions of the Act. The Board at its last meeting resolved to adhere to its former resolution. A four-roomed bouse occupied by a man named Heather in Maitland street, Dunedin, was almost entirely destroyed by fire with its contents on Sunday afteruoon. The insurances are £IOO on the furniture in the Union Insurance Office, and £IOO on the Louse in the Equitable Office.
The Coptic, C»pt. Bruce, from Plymouth via Capetown and Hobart, arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday. She brings 1792 tons cargo and 114 passengers. Prior to her arrival at Capetown, Walter Manumey, a child in the steerage, succumbed to an attack of mi nningiiis. The Union Company have received cable advice from Hobart announcing

CameroK, manager of the Moa Flfti station, Ohigo, died suddenly. Douglas Campbell, aged 8, was killed at Marton on Saturday afternoon by the capsizing of a dray. His neck was broken. A cattle driver from Okarito, named J. Jamieson, was drowned in the Mahinapua creek, near Hokitika, yesterday morning. He attempted to ford it and the horse had to swim. Jameison tried to swim alongside, but became tired and sank. The deceased and his mate had been exhausted travelling day and night to reach the cattle sales yesterday. They had been detained by boisterous weather, and suffered from exposure. The Guiding Star, barquentine, arrived at Oamaru from Hobart on Sunday, but was quarantined. No disease is on board, and it is expected the vessel will be admitted to pratique on Friday.
