TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
A meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board was held, yesterday. Present—Meßsr? Acton (Chairnaao), Manchester, Gray, Talbot, Tesehemaker, Morris, Kerr, Wilson, Jonas and Flatman.
Messrs Jas. McEwen and Co., wrote re the dredge not giving the Engineer satisfaction, nnd the refusal of the Board to honor their draft for same.—Tbe Chairman explained that a claim had been made on behalf of tbe Board for £ll6 3s 2d, and tLe draft had now been honored.
The Agent of the N.Z, Insurance Co. wrote declining to insure the Taniwha. Tbe Engineer reported that no material damiige had been done to the Breakwater by the heavy weather experienced since last meeting. He recommended the purchase of a coal bunker of 30 tone, so that the tug Titan and dradge Taniwha could coal; also, if the Borough Council would not consent to reduce their rates for tbe ■npply of water for the dredger that the Board make arrangements for an independent Btipp'y.—The recommendation r« coal bunker wna adopted. The Harbor Master reported that the dredge bad been engaged dredging during the most of the month, lie recommended that f«rew moorings be laid down, one to the black buoy and one to the checkered buoy.—On the recommendation of Mr Qray, who thoughtrajaquiries on the subject of moorings made, the matter was referred to the Works Committee.
The Standing Committee reported against carrying out at present Mr Merchant's proposal that a parapet wall should be erected along the Breakwater for the protection of the wharf. They had instructed the engineer to report on the details of .Messrs Ogilvie and Byers' claim for extras, and had forwarded a claim on the contractors for the dredge for £ll6 3* 2d based on Mr Marchant's report. They recommended the Board to pay the contractor's account for extras less £3315s 8d and without prejudice.—after some debate the report was adopted. Six tenderers put in for the construction of the north wall, and after consideration It was resolved—" That the tender of Messrs Palluer and Jones, contract No. 2, C, price £24,437 10a, be accepted, provided tho Board can obtain the concessions named. If not, that Messrs Pulliaer and Jones' tender A, price £28,6*7 10a, be accepted." The Engineer explained that for tenders under A no conditions whatever were attached ; under B the stone was to be obtained at Kirby's quarry, and under 0 the contractor could impose any conditions. Tne concessions asked for by the contractors under C was permission to run a tramway under the viaduct at Whaleß' Creek and up the Wai-iti Road.
It was resolved—" That the Chairman ascertain the steps necessary to obtain the concessions asked for, and that he arrange for special meetings of the local bodies if necessary." Accounts amounting to £1678 lis lid were passed for payment, and the meet* ing terminated.
