Mary O’Connor, mother of the child recently found dead near the Thistle Hotel, Auckland, was brought up on Thursday at the Police Couit, charged with infant slaughter. The case was remanded until Wednesday next. Bail was a'lnwod, accused in £SOO and two sureties of £250 each, but ae she was unable to obtain sureties she was compelled to go to gaol to await trial. Pour Germans, named W, Bargotte, Carl Bargotte, H. Hench, and Jean Walliok, were brought up at the Papakura (Wellington) R.M. Court on Thursday charged with being concerned in the recent eviction case at Papakura Valley, and with assaulting White. They were committed for trial.
Herr Von I)er Lasa, the celebrated chess author and player, is at present in Wellington, and has played a game with Mr Benbow, the local champion, The King Lopez, an often used game, ended in a draw, but another meeting has been arranged.
A sad drowning case occurred at Ashburton on Thursday night. The river Ims been in flood for the last few days and the fords are in bad order. A man named Jenkins, wife, and four children worn out for a drive in a trap and tried to ford the river. The trap c-ipsiz’d, and all Hie children and horse wore drowned. Joskins and his wife managed to crawl out.
When the steamer Balmoral O.istle, which arrived at Auckland from London on Saturday, was three days oui from Homs, the dead body of a man wis found io tno of the coal bookers. Ho had evidently stowed himself away, and been suffocated by the coal dust.
