GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Council was held on Wednesday afternoon. Pro-sr-nt—Mea irs John. Talbot (Chairmen), W. Moody, W. Balfour* R. McKay and R. A. Barker, The Chairman stated that ho had visited the Woodbury district with Mr Moore to test the feeling in regard to irrigation, and a meeting of residents there agreed almost unanimously to ask the Council to proceed with the design. The objectors, finding the amount of rate (that was at stake very trifling had withdrawn all opposition. Mr Lowe (Resident Engineer) had enquired re water supply atSeadown, but nothing had been done in the matter. The Rangitata works were going on well. Heavy floods had occurred in the country, but as yet ho damage had been done. The protective works on the Opihi river wore answering admirably. This was not only gratifying but it was likewise fortunate, for had there been no works he felt sure the overflow of the river would have been serious. Correspondence was read— Prom Mr Moore apologising for his unavoidable absence. Prom Messrs White and Co,, re certain land business. —■ This was discussed in Committee, From Mr C. G. Tripp adhering to his original price, per acre for land in the water supply district of Woodbury. Prom sundry correspondents re land in water supply districts. These were discussed but nothing of interest cropped up. From certain residents in the vicinity of the bridge over the Pareora, asking the Council to repair it.— Itwas resolved to secure the co-operation of the Waimate Council, meanwhile theEngiueer to report on the repair* necessary and cost. From Mr W. Shiers (Clerk to the Geraldine Road Board) stating that a complaint had been made against the contractor for the Rangitata Water-race, that ho had left the Work in a highly dangerous state, where it crossed the road leading to Peel Forest, and adding that if it were left a serious accident might occur, —The Engineer was requested to inquire into the matter.

Matters connected, with the acquirement of land in the water-supply district of Seadown came np for consideration, and were discussed in committee, certain steps being resolved upon,—Mr Balfour moved, Mr Moody seconded, and it was resolved—” That *£3oo be placed on deposit on most advantageous terms to the Seadown water-supply district, seeing that there is no prospect of the works being got ready in time for this season.”

Messrs Meason and Marchant reported —” We have the honor to report on the works under our charge ns follows: Raogitata water supply This work is proceeding satisfactorily, although this month it lias been considerably delayed by bad weather. Opihi bridge protective works—These are now almost completed, and have been carried out in a very satisfactory manner.” Mr Moody moved, Mr Mackny seconded, and it was resolved—“ That this Council is of opinion that the subsidies given to local bodies under the Local Bodies Finance Act should be continued to assise the payments demanded by the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board ; failing a continuance of these subsidies a return of some portion of the property tax collected in the County should be made instead.” The Special Order constituting the Woodbury water-supply district was drafted, read, and passed. It will be confirmed at next meeting. Accounts amountiog to £484 were passed for payment and the Council «d----earned,
