AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Town Board was held last evening. Present Messrs Loe (Chairman), Story, Proudlock, Edgeler, and Austin. Air Dyson, the Clerk, was in attendance. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. nOKUESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read:— From the Geraldine County Council, enclosing cheque for £3O Is 7d, being one-third of proceods from sale of deferred-payment sections in Arowhenua Village Settlement, which had been received from Commissioner of Crown Lands on their behalf, and asking tho Board to acknowledge the receipt of sftme.—The Clerk stated that he had acknowledged same. From Mr J. B. Epps, Secretary Trustees .of Primitive Methodist Church, asking the Board to erect a wooden culvert in front of the Primitive Methodist Church, in order to allow of vehicles to be taken into the section.—The matter was left for the Overseer to report on. From Mrs J. A, Mackenzie, stating that the culvert near her place was not large enough to allow the water to pass through it, consequently her paddocks were flooded. The letter further stated that if the grievance was not at once remedied it would seriously damage her wheat crop.—A long discussion took place on this matter, Mr Edgeler being of opinion that the culvert was out of the Board's district, while Measrs Proudlock and Lee contended that the Board were responsible for the same. After some further discussion it was decided to leave the matter for the Overseer to report upon. From Mr J. Polaschek, drawing the attention of the Board to the flow of water from Alexander street on to his sec: ions during rainy weather.—Left to the Overseer to report on.
AGREEMENTS OF LEASES. The Clerk submitted several agreements of leases of reserves for the Chairman's signature, which was appended. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Overseer's report was read as follows: To the Chairman and Commissioners . Arowhetma Town Board. Genilembn,— I liave the honor to report Ihat sinco last Board day do surfacemaa hns been employed, and no other works carried on. As (he Board at last meeting did not decide upon calling for tenders for sliiogling Maude street (although Mr li-iker wrote that lie had forwarded a voucher for the amount, viz., £3O la 7d) consequently I did riot advertise for tenders. Also, the Board not having selected the half-a-re which they «re omit'ed to as per Mr Bakei's letter of Sept. 6th, 1887, I could not ad visa him, although he suggested the sections should be indicated 10 him aa enWy as possible to enable all the extra reserves to be vested at the same tim". I also beg to suggest that the lean-to at the cottige occupied by Mr Rndburnd bo paijted. The balance in Buik last Poard day was £77 la 9d, and after paying Inat monh'.i accounts, and adding moneys received and piid into the Bunk, there is a balanco of £9116s 4d.— I have, etc., George Dyson, Clerk to the Board.
Be the f election of a half-acre reserve—After some discussion it was decided that the Chairman, the Clerk, and Mr Story be appointed to select the reserve.
With regard to shingling Maude street, it was decided that the Clerk employ day labor to get some earth taken out of the water-tables, and pat on to the crown of the street, and to call for tenderi for shingling the same by the Ist of November. APPOINTMENT OP CXEBK AND OYEHSEEE. There were three application for the post of Clerk and Overseer. After a slight discussion, the application of Mr A. W. Gaze at the same rate of salary as the present Overseer was accepted ; his duties to commence on the first of November. THE BOARD'S COTTAGES. In reply to a question, the Clerk stated that since last Board day he had received £V 13s for rent, which he had paid to the Board's account into the Bank. He also stated that he had spoken to other tenants, who signified their intention to pay by the next monthly meeting. THE UQABB'S OFFICE.
A long discussion took place on the advisability of harm* an office in which books, etc., could be kept. Mr Story was of opinion that it was a matter which needed seeing to at once, , would be better to wait until one of
I the cottages was vacant. Ultimately the matter was postponed. FENCING ROADS. A rery lengthy discussion took place on the subject of fencing roads, but no definite decision was arrived at. account.?. Accounts amounting to £lO 12s lid were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
