In consequence of the bad weather at Napier the races had to be postponed.

William Johnston was eharged on Wednesday at Cambridge with personation at the Cambridge election on the 261 h and remanded. Whilst (ha schooner Loristan was off Para Buy, Whangarei, on Tuesday, in the midst ot a storm, a large ball of fire rushed passad the vessel, burying itself in the water just ahead of her. A. strong smell of sulphur was perceptible.

The hwsuit at Auckland, Tareha Tarot v. Mihi Wiromu, arising out of the tapu of fish in the Hauroki Gulf, has been decided by arbitration—- Mihi Wiromu is to retain two horses, and pay £2O to the plaintiff.

The annual report of the Patients’ and Prisoners’ Aid Society, Dunedin, allowed that the expenditure had been slightly io excess of income. The agency, besides undertaking pastoral work in gao', hospital, and lunatic asylum, assisted discharged prisoners and patients with money, advice, clothing, &c,, and helped many to return to their homes or obtain work.

At Taupo on Sunday an Auckland surveyor named Stevenson committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

At the Auckland Supreme Court on Saturday, Mr Button, on behalf of the bar, addressed a valedictory speech to Mr Justice Ward. A serious accident occurred at Te Aroha (Auckland), on Saturday. Three men named Scott, Reid, and Hill, were at work at the Colonist mine, and Scott was preparing pickaxes for work, when he plunged one into a tub of water. An explosion followed, and two of the men were injured. Reid was seriously injured, and his condition is critical. It is supposed that the water into which the pick was thrown contained nitroglycerine. The deposits of all but the two lowest tenderers for the new Post Office at Wellington have been returned. The lowest is a Christchurch firm.
