TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee tonic place on Tuesday evening last, Present Messrs H. M. Milfß (Chairrrun), W.G.BWland, J. Davis, E. Brown, and A. W. Surridge. MINUTES. The minutes of ihe last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was rend and approved. Inward uas read as follows : From the South Canterbury Board of Education, 6tating that the sum of £2 had been placed to the credit of the Committee, being grant of £ for £ for repairs to ventilators, etc. From the same, stating that £1 had been granted for repairs to .gutters and spouting, on condition that the Committee spent £2. From the same, in reply to a letter from the Committee re the attendance of the Winchester children at the L'emuka school, and stating that any additional accommodation in the way oi desks or forms would be provided ; also, staggesting that the difficulty might be met by a re-arrangement of the classes. —The Chairman stated the Board had been so long in replying that the Master h»d : marie arrangements before this letter came to hand. From the same re the election to fill the vacancy on the S,O. Board of Education caused by the retirement of Dr Foster, the candidates being Messrs J. Brown and R. H. Pearpoint.—On the motion of Mr Rutland it was decided to support Mr J. Brown.—The Secretary reported that he ha 3 written to a number of School Committees requesting their co-operation in securing the election of Mr Brown.
From Mr Francis Franks, offering the Committee the use of o room euf ficipnt to accommodate the children attending from Winchester.—The Chairman said he bad seen Mr Franks and thanked him for his offer but informed him that other arrangements had been made. IKEEfiTXLAR ATTENDANTS. The Chairman stated that nearly all the children whose nhmes were on she list of irregular attenJants supplied to hiin by the Head Master were now attending regularly,.or their absence was satisfactorily accounted for. TJSITOES. Mr Davis baid he had visited the school during the month. He found the fences in a very bad condition and thought if better supervision were tiot exercised ov<<rthechildrennh<>nin the playground, the fences could ntt be kept in order. He suggested that about 12 loads of shingle should be.procured, and placed whore it was most needed. In wet weather it was difficult for the children to get at the drinkiug water. The Chairman said they should recollect that the summer was at hand and tbey were short of funds.—lt was thought hi»Uer to postpone the matter re the shingle for the present. Be the fences, it was shown that much damage was done by the children getting over them when coming to and going from the the school. Various suggestions wsre made, one member considering that the matter would . not be satisfactorily arranged until a Master's house was erectpd on the ground, and better supervision over the children exercised. It was ultimately decided on the recommendation of Mr Davis that the Head Master's attention should be drawn to the matter. Mr A. W. Surndge was appointed visitor for the month. STATIONERY EEOEIPTS. ■]> was resolved that the attention of the Head Mnstir should b? drawn to the falling off in the receipts for stationery, etc., and that he be requested to'impress on the various teuchere the necessity of obtaining more liberal contributions irom the children. MASTER'S KErOET. The Head Master's report for the month was as follows : " I havo the honor to submit the following report for August : —Weekly roll: 80y5,,202 G; girls, 181.2 ; total, 383.8. Sirict HVir-sre : 155.3 ; girls, 143.8 ; total, 298.7. Highest, attendance : Boyp, 165 ; girls, 155 ; total, 320, The Ivdl fram* needs flight repairs. I mcloai-chpqn's for £3 2s B', being amount of stationary fees collected during present quarter.—l have, etc., " W. BryARS." ACCOUNTS. Accr.unta to the-amount of £8 7s 6d were passer! for payment. The meeting then terminated.
