The London Committee is favorable to the proposal that a special annexe should be allotted to Lancashire, believing that if this be done a splendid collection of good* will be sent. Sir Saul Samuel has purchased a further collection of relics of Captain Cook, which have lately been discovered in a secret recess of Sir Joseph Banks* museum, Scarlet fever, which has been very prevalent in the Metropolis for some time past, continues to sprewf with alarming rapidity, and tbs resources of the London hospitals are strained to the almost. Splendid street pageants were held in Philadelphia to celebrate the centenary of the Constitution of the United States. During the progress of the festival • stand collapsed, injuring many of the occupants. Spain has attempted (o occupy an island in the Red Sea, bat England was beforehand, and hoisted the British flag first. A Scotch syndicate is reported to have purchased twenty cargoes of Java sugar at a cost of £400,000, Sept. 16. It is expected it will be necessity to permit foreign exhibitors to apply for space at the Melbourne Exhibition until the end of November. A disastrous railway accident occurred near Doncaster by two excursion trains coming into collision. So far as is known, 20 persons were killed snd fully 70 injured. The procession of industrial classes in connection with the centenary of the United States constitution, comprised 40,000 operatives and 10,000 horitss. The reports of the collapse of a stand daring the festival have been exaggerated. Sept, 17.
Stocks on the Berlin Bourse have fallen, in consrqnenco of the improbability of the Emperors meeting at Stettin. France is jubilant. M. Sausbroy, charged by M, Rouvier to enquire into the question of sugar taxation, advocates the abolition of bounties throughout Europe. The railway accident at Doncaster was owing to the change in the block system for flags while the excursion trains were being ran to ths Doncaster races. Sept. 18. Latest advices from the East Coast of Africa state that messengers despatched from Zanzibar have reached Emin Bey, who was astonished to hear of the expedition under Stanley for bis relief, Commnnicaiion having been effected, Emin Bey will now be able to obtain ample provisions. Further particulars of the railway accident near Doncaster slate that 24 persons were killed and 60 injured. The victims were oil residents of Sheffield. Berlin, Sept. 17. The Emperor has returned from Stettin to-day. It is anticipated that the meeting between bis Majesty and the Czar did not take place, Rome, Sept. 17. The outbreak of cholera in Italy and Sicily is increasing considerably, both at Naples and Messina.
