The Overseer’s report was read and considered. Ihe report was as follows: “ I have the honor to report for the past month as under*— “ Tenders have been invited for the following contrasts: No. 14, forming road by Qresnaway’e; No. 16, maintaining the Ban* gif ata fords for 12 months; No. 16, carting shingle for repairs on various roads. * The contractor for enlarging tbs Canal drain by Education Beserva 1400 has thrown up bis contract. Flanks have been placed over Cooper's Creek, as ordered. The work authorised to be done at the Temuka footbr>dge is being carried out. During the month surfacemen have been employed filling ruts and repairing various roads. I recommend the following roads for shingling • 30 chains of L tngridge’s road ; 20 chains of the hill this side of the bridge over the creek on the Rangitira Valley road. The only shingle available is that in the pit on Mr A. Allen’s tarn ; it is of very inferior quality. About 30 chains of Stewart’s road also requires shingling. A two-bone team, with plough and scoop, is wanted for about a month filling holes, ploughing out water-tables, etc., on various roads. The bridge at Green Hayes requires a new deck, and, at least, two extra girders. Mr F. H. Barker having completed the drain through his property, the bridge requires to be built and the road drains deepened. “Some timber suitable for girders of bridges over road drains is required. 1 have obtained soma timber from Mr Brown for the purpose of decking such bridges. “Be Mr JEtuddenklau’s Application—As Mr Buddeuklau stales in his letter, there is a probability of the river crossing the long -aland and joining the middle stream. The road has originally been formed half a chain wide, but for several years parts of it have not been available for traffic owing to river encroio'imente. Tracks have been made and use d whore the river is not available. When the river is m flood a great portion of the road and the adjacent land is covered with water, and a deposit of sand and silt left in some places and boles scoured in the road in
other places. This road is the most direct one from Mr Ruddenklau’s homestead to the railway station, but, so far as I can learn, is very little used by anyone else. “ Mr A. M. Clark’s Application-In addition to the information supplied by the Surrey Office, I hare received from Mr Meason the plan of a road surveyed by him for the Board in 1882. This is one of the roads shown on (be map, and runs along the non h west, boundary of rural section No. 4323. There is a resolution in the minutes of December 6th, 1881, refering to the survey of t iis roid. Two pipe culverts are required in Nicholson’s cutting to divert the water from the side channel. Some 9in. and 12in. pipes are required, “ Re Gorse—Several owners of land have complied with the gorse orders served on them. Many others have signified their intmtion to do so as soon as they havs their grain sown. I would suggest that another mooch bo given, and that en advertisement be pU' is the paper to that effect. “F. Ahchbb.” it was decided to invite tender* for shiogMog Stewart’s road, T.'io Overseer was instructed to invite tenders for the use of a team aud scoop for a month.
With regard to the bridge at Green Ha p as, it was decided to alio a the matter to eland over for a month, the Overseer
to report as to the advisability of widening it. The Overseer was instructed to call for renders for the bridge required at Mr Barker’s. Tno necessary bridge timber was ordered to be obtained from the local merchants, Re Buddenklau’s Koad, the Board did not see its way to move in the matter. In the matter of clearing gorse, the Overseer’s suggestions were agreed to except in cases where the leases expired during the month. DEPUTATION. Messrs Lawlor, McGillicoddy, and Walton waited upon the Board in reference to roads required through Educational Reserve No. 1400. They stated that at present they were quite unable to cart tone ng material, etc., on to their sections, and uni-'SH something was done shortly they wou'd nave to throw up their leases. They also •••..sked for a re-valuation of their eectona, with a view of a reduction of the rates. They fully explained the situation of the roads required by them and withdrew. The raster was carefully considered by the Board, and also the question of the road applied for at the last meeting, and in reference to the latter it was resolved to call for tenders for forming 30 chains of road from Rolleston’s road to Native Reserve No. 905, and for 30 chains from the Native Reserve to ihe corner of block 5, reserve No. 1400. Bt the special request preferred by the deputation, the Overseer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of the necessary work, and that it then be submitted to the High School Commissioners, with an application for a share of the cost.
