CONCERT AT BELFIELD.

On Thursday evening last a concert in aid of the prize fund was held in the above school, which was literally crammed with ladies and gentlemen from all parts of the district. Mr W. R. Turpin presided, The proceedings commenced with an overture by the Misses May and Gimpson. Mr Kent next sang " Duckfoot Sue," and an encore being demanded he responded by singing " Oh, the Fairies," which was also well received. Mr E. Griffiths then gave a recitation, which was admirably rendered, and during the delivery of which, notwithstanding the crowded state of the room, a pin might have been heard to drop. Miss Taylor (of Rangkata) sang " In the Gloaming " in her usual pleasing manner, followed by Mr Binskin's song, "Over goes the Show," which was well received, and caused a considerable amount of laughter. Miss Coles sang " Call for Mother, Birdie's Dying." The duet by Miss May and Mr Bmskin, " Money Matters," was the most attractive feature of the evening, and was deservedly encored, and partly sung over again. Miss E. Coles sang " Say not Earewell," and a song by Miss Gimpson terminated the first part of an excellent programme. The second portion of the programme commenced with a pianoforte duet by the Misses May and Gimson, and songs were rendered by Messrs Binskin and Kent, Mrs Owers (of Timaru), and the Misses Coles, Taylor, Gimpson, and May, the latter having again to respond to an encore which was richly deserved. The proceedings terminated with the singing of the National Anthem and the usual vote of thanks. The room was then cleared for dancing, while the ladies retired to the master's house, where a sumptuous lepast was partaken of. Dancing was kept up with great spirit until an early hour in the morning. Music was supplied by Mr John Beherens, and Mr Binskin ably officiated as M.C. Before starting for home a hearty vote of thanks ; was accorded to the Committee, and all who had contributed to make the affair a success.
