MR SLACK’S CANDIDATURE.

' TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As there is a rumor afloat that Mr Slack was brought forward for the purpose of splitting rotes with Mr Twomey, one of tho candidates for the Gladstone electoral district, I think it only right that the minds of the electors should be disabused of any such impression, and I, think the enclosed letters will satisfy all ns to the inaccuracy of the report. So may I ask you to kindly insert them in your paper.— Yours truly, WM. POSTLETHWAITB. Geraldine, 19th August, 1887, [copy.] Raukipuba, 16th August, 1887. Dear Suck,— -I find that it is cur*, reutly reported in the district that I was the cause of your coming forw«rd to contest the Gladstone seat at the forthcoming election. As there is no foundation for such a statement, will you kindly write me a letter to deny the charge. If uncontradicted it may effect Mr Rhodes* candidature, because it has been stated that you gave the following reason for coming forward, viz., to split votes with Mr Twomey. It is not only damaging to Mr Rhodes, bat also to the Political Reform Association, therefore I should like such a letter as I could publish.—Yours, very truly, Wm. Postlethwaitb. f copy. | Woodside, Geraldine, August 18th, 1887. Dear Postlethwaitb,— ln answer to your letter of the 16tb, informing me that it is currently reported in the district that you were the cause of my coming forward ,to contest the Gladstone' seat at the forthcoming election for thefollowing reason, viz., to split votes with Mr Twomey, (his I deny in toto. I have irnever by thought, word, or deed, ever insinuated such a cause. On the contrary, you are one of the few opposed to me coming forward.—Yours very truly, (Signed) Wm. Upton Slack,
