A fire took place in High street, Auck-, land, on Wednesday morning, in the harness factory of James Haig and Isaac Hill. The fire was got under before the building was destroyed. Incendiarism is strongly suspected. The insurance is— Hill's stock, £SOO in the Standard ; Haig's stock, £2OO in the Siandard. The building was owned by B, Bell, and was insured for £2OO in the New Zealand., The Committee of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, having considered the question of liability of shipowners for loss through the negligence of officers, recently addressed a letter to the Minister of Marine, calling his attention to section 25 of the Mercantile Law Act, 1880, with a view to having an amendment made by which shipowners might be relieved from liability for damage under that provision. 'Zhe question arose through a,recent decision given in the Supreme Court, A Wellington divorce case, Rush v. Rush, a wife's petition on the graund of cruelty, was dismissed, the evidence showiog the petitioner had condoned the offence by cohabitation after the committal of the alleged cruelty. At the Napier Supreme Court on Wednesday, John Rose, a young man, charged -with forging and uttering a cheque for £7l2b 6d, was convicted and sentenced to three years' penal servitude, there being two previous convictions against him. David Alexander McLeod, charged with the larceny of a Bank draft and with forging an endorsement theroto, was a'so, convicted and sentenced ?to three years' penal servitude, there ; being a previous conviction against him. The ; Kokatahi school sondal (West Coast) is likely to be prominently brought before the: public again, Mr Moharry, the dismissed school teacher, having issued a writ on the proprietors of the West Coast Times for £ISOO for libel. It is understood, from Home advices, that Martin Kennedy, of Kennedy Bros., Brunnerton Coal Company, is at present getting four iron steamers built at Home ; two are to trade between Greymoutb and Melbourne, and two are for the East Coast of the Middle Island trade. They w'll be built as large as the water accommodation of the port will allow. The mail coa<jh from Opunake to Mauaia met with an, accident on Thursday whereby a lady passenger had ber arm and ankle broken, and the driver sustained a raMier serious injury.
