TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Timasu Harbor Board was held yesterday. Present —Messrs Wilson, Acton, Morris, Talbot, Gray, Tesohemaker, Jonas, Kerr, and Gibson, Mr E. Acton was eleoted Chairman, The Standing Committee recommended that the Board should adhere to their pre< vicus resolution fixing the rates for surf boats when used for working the e.s. Wakatipu, and that the suggestion of the Harbor Master that two white pine spars 40ft long and 18in by 18in be procured as floating fenders be adopted. They recommended that the claim of Messrs Ogilvie and Byers for £25 be held over until the completion of the contract for erection of the dredge; that no master should be appointed for the dredge at present, and that the salary of the engineer be £l4 per month. They strongly supported the Harbor Master’s application for a crane on Moody Wharf. The Harbor Master, Captain Clarkson, reported the arrival during the month of 21 steamers and 7 sailing vessels, and the departure of 21 steamers and 4 sailing vessels. The moorings of the tug Titan had been removed farther north daring the month, and the dredge will occupy the former berth of the Titau, Of the eight surf boats belonging to the Board two were worthless. A crane on the Moody Wharf was very much needed, and steps should be placed at the no'thsideof the Moody Wharf for the use il the tug Titan. A number of stores were needed.— ®he matters re the surf boats, lauding steps, etc., were referred to the Standing Committee. The Engineer reported that I monolith and 24 lineal feet of block-work had been added to the breakwater during the month. Be cement, be reported that if every block in the yard were nsed they would still require an additional 1200 casks, but if they determined to leave 40 Spare blocks in the yard, for use in case of emergency, 2900 casks would be necessary. The building of the dredge was proceeding steadily, but many parts needed alteration or adding to. An alteratiod to the boiler would cost £3O. Everything was now ready for ealliug for tenders for the north wall—lt was decided to call for tenders for 2000 sasks of cement. Be the alteration of tbe dredge boiler, the Engineer explained that an English certificate was sent with the boiler stating that it had been tested up to 731bs, but the Inspector of Machinery here declined to grant a certificate for more than 601bs. He (the Engineer) agreed with the teat; he was certain the boiler would not stand the test of fißlbs to the square inch, Mr Gray fully corroborated this as an sxpert. B« the north'wall, Mr Jonas proposed that tenders be called for its construction, Mr Flatman proposed as an amendment that the question be deferred for three months, pending the issue of the Shaw Savill appeal case. Five members voted for the resolution and four for the amendment. The Chairman gave his deliberative and casting vote for the amendment, and it was carried. Messrs Jonas and Kerr protested against snob conduct, and left the meeting. The tender of Mr T. O. Williams for buildn* tfce slipway, £BB9, was accepted.

Account# to tbe amount ot £1179 13s 9d were passed for payment, and jthe. meeting terminated.
