AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The regular monthly mealing of the Arowhenua Town Board war held on Wednesday evening. Present-—Messrs Lee (Chairman), 0, Story, Edgeler, Proud lock acd Austin. MINCTBS. The minutes of the previous regular meeting and of a special meeting were read, and confirmed. XHB ORIEK BBBBRfB. A deputation waited upon the Board in reference to a resolution passed at a special meeting re the creek reserve, Mr Douglas stated that he understood the Board bad decided to adhere lo the old survey of the Village Settliment. He considered, in that case, a great in justice would be done to those settlers who had recently applied for an extension of their sections, It had been arranged by the Government that such Bottlers who had land bordering on the creek reserve could take up such spare portions, while other settlers were allowed to take up additional quarter acre sections. For his own part he had .already been at some expense for fencing which would have to be removed. Mr Cunard stated that he had seen Mr Baker, who had stated that the ■urvey had cost the Government £7O and that he (Mr Baker) considered that the creek boundary was of little use except to the adjacent settlers. The Chairman thought that the deputation should reduce their views to writing and the Board would discuis the matter afresh.
Mr DougUs protested against the surrey being altered. He and others would suffer and no benefit would accrue to anyone.
Mr Cunard explained that the fences of the sections mod not, of necessity, go to the creek boundary, There was a space of 9 or 15 links, reserved under the new survey on.,eilb*r side of the creek.
Mr Austin thought it would be foolish to apply for further changes now. The Chairman explained that Messrs Bayner and Hajhursl had interviewed Mr Ballance on the subject, and had Bent a petition to the Lands Office, praying that the original suryey might be adhered to. In accordance with the petition, Mr Baker had met the Board and it had been agreed to accede to the petition. If the petition did not represent the wishes of, the settlers as a body the proper course would be to forward a counter petition.
Mr Proudlock thought it would be dangerous to depend upon a counter petition. Tho interests of minorities must be protected. In this case persons holding sections a long way from the creek would vote for the original purvey being adhered to. Mr Edg»ler was opposed to the new survey. There was a road line alongside hit section and if this was closed or done away with he should certainly demand compensation from Government, ,' Mr Cunard thought that Mr Edgeler had a good deal to do with getting up the petition. For bis own part he confidered it only interested drferred payment settlers. The others bad no business to vote or petition in the matter. It was only poor people who took up deferred payment sections and it waß theirrighiß that were being iotcrfered with. Mr Rayner would not go in for a deferred payment allotment and he ought not to meddle with those who did. A lot of discussion fpllowed, and it wtf ultimately agreed that a pounter potitjon shorjld be forwarded to the Qrowi L*nds Commissioner, The deputation then withdrew. The Clerk was n quested to forward a
