The election for the representation of the Basingstone division of Hampshire, vacant by the elevation of Mr Sclater Booth to the peerage, resulted in the return of Mr Jeffreys, a Conservative candidate, who defeated his opponent, Mr Eye, a Giadatonian, bv a majority of 732.

Tenders for the Wellington Harbor Board Loan of £50,000, bearing 4| per cent, interest, were opened to-day. The total amount offered was £59,000. Tenders at £97 10s, the minimum, receive 81 per cent, in the allotment, tenders above that in full. A meeting of the Conservative party under the presidency of Lord Salisbury, was held at the Carlton Club fo-day, for the purpose of discussing the objections raised by the Liberal Unionists to several clauses of the Irish Land Bill now before Parliament. Lord Salisbury announced that in order to meet the views and retain the support of the Liberal Unionists, the Government consented to amend the Bill by admitting a revision of judicial rents pending the introduction of the Laud Purchase Bill. The Government had also decided to drop the bankruptcy clauses embodied in the measure. The majority of the meeting concurred in the proposals of the Government, with only a few dissentients.

The French Minister of War has decided to raise twenty-two regiments. A. conference is about to take place between the Emperors of Germany and Austria at Gastein. The former is at present on a visit to that city.

tion hns keen arrived at by the British and Russian Commissioners, and that it has been decided that Russia shall receive the territory between Kuehk and Muaghab, north of Herat, while accepting a frontier on the Oxus as defined by England. Russia further renounces her claims to the district awarded her in 1878.
