An Enterprising Chinaman.— A Chinaman hessent to England for the plant for a dairy factory at Elthara, Taranaki.

A Costly Accident. —lt is estimated that the Windsor accident will cost the Victorian Government over £200,000, Railway Passes,— The New South Wales Assembly passed a resolution to grant free railway passes in perpetuity to ex-Members who had sat in three Parliaments.

Poisoned. —Four men were poisoned at Strathkellar Station, Hamilton, Victorit, by taking tea from the water of a boiler which had contained arsenic. Two of them died. Stolen Notes.— Several hundreds of pound notes, which were stolen from a Victorian farmer named Sykes some time ago, have reached Melbourne from India, where they have been in circulation. Wrestling. — A wrestling match between Dunne and Cannon, at Melbourne recently was the scene of a brutal exhibition of violence. Cannon disabled his opponent by •hoking bin. till insensible.

Certificated Tbachbhs. There are 1971 certificated teachers employed by the Education Department of New Zealand. Only two of these have attained first rank (A 1), and one of those is in Otago.

Mb Rollrston’s Addresses.— The Hon. W. Rolleston addressed his constituents at Geraldine last evening, and a full report will appear in our next. On Saturday next he will address the electors at Woodbu.-y, on Monday he will speak at Orari, and on the following Saturday at South Rangita'a.

POLITICAL KeEOEM AT WINCHESTER. A meeting of electors takes place at Winchester to-morrow evening to consider the advisability of forming a local branch of (be Political Reform Association. The meeting will be held in the Mechanics’ Institute, and will commence at half past seven o’clock.

Geraldine Floral and Horticultural Society. —Members are reminded (hut the annual meeting takes place this evening in the Good Templars’ Hall, when 'the annual report and balance-sheet will be presented. The meeting takes place at half-past seven o’clock, and members should make a point of attending. The Engine-Drivers and Alison Smith. —A meeting of the Victorian Engine-drivers’ Association passed resolutions condemning Mr Alison Smith, the -doting locomotive superintendent, for undue severity in punishing offenors against discipline. The Commissioners consider that Mr 8m th only showed judicious firmness, and decline to take action in the matter. Public opinion is quite with Mr Smith. A Noxious Weed. —An unknown weed has apoeared at Smoaton, Victoria, which shows little or nothing on the surface, but it is so rooted that it is impossible to plough through it, and crowbars have frequently to be used to uproot, some of the plants. As the roots extend downward they become much stronger, and at about two feet from the surface some of them are as much as six inches m circumference.

The Queen’s Girt. The “Christian World “ says;—At the opening of the General Assembly of the Established Church of Scotland the Lord High Commissioner, after reading the Queen’s letter, announced threceipt of Her Majesty’s usual gift of £3OOO for the promotion of the Gospel in the Highlands a portion of the same to he appropriated to the encouragement of young men to preach in the Gaelic language to the inhabitants of the northern parts of the kingdom. Banquet at Ti mahu.— The leading oitisam of Timaru and- district gave a grand banquet on Tuesday evening to Mr Moss Jonas in recognition of his services in connection with the celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee. Mr Halkett-Dawson occupied the ohair and the proceedings were a brilliant success. Drowning Accident at Wellington.— During a heavy southerly gale at Wellington on Tuesday the freezing nulk Jubilee was driven ashore on the Petone beach, biz men put off in a boat from the shore bat on nearing the hulk the boat capsized and four of the occupants were drowned. One man got on board the hulk and the sixth man managed to reach the shore. A meeting was held on Tuetday evening at which a bazaar committee were chosen to make all necessary arrangements. Captain Pearpoint was elected chairman and treasurer, and Mr W. Ooltmsn, junr,, secretary. It was decided to write to the ladies in the surrounding district asking fur their practical help and co-operation in the undertaking.
