London, July 14. Th« Hon. Evelyn Ashley opposes Mr Trevelyan. M. Katkoff, editor of the Moscow Gazette, is reported to be dying. Pranzini, the Parisian murderer, has been sentenced to death, The annual match between the Gentlemen and Players proved disastrous to the former, The Players scored 595 in their only innings, Shrewsbury making 101. The Gentlemen only reached 100 in the first innings, and following on obtained 171, being thus defeated bySone innings and 122 runs. Mr Roller was injured during the progress of the match, and had to retire.
A deputation from the Anti-Sugar Bounties Association will ask the Government to allow the whole question of bounties to be discussed in the House of Commons.
bir G. Berry and Sir Saul Samuel had a conference yesterday with the Director of the French Postal Department on the question of transit rates for Australian mails. It was arranged that the latter should report on the matter to the Minister of Finance, whose decision will be given hence. Sailed—S.S. Arawa. July 15. In the House of Commons last night, Sir J. Ferguson, replying to a question, stated that the Anglo-Turkish Convention relating to Egypt was still unratified by the Sultan, and Sir D. Wolff, British Special Commissioner, would leave Constantinople to-night, his mission having closed. Kerr Krupp is dead. King Kalakaua has barricaded his palace, and intends to defend himself until British men-of-war arrive. If he persists in his refusal to sign a new Constitution, bloodshed is feared.
Mr Chesson, in a letter to the Times, complains of French war vessels kidnapping natives from the New Hebrides and Solomon Islands.
It is reported that Russian merchants ou the frontier have been ordered to dismiss all German clerks before September.
Sir Henry Holland, not without hesitation, has decided that the evidence is insufficient to justify him in removing Sir }, Pope Hennessy from the Governorship of Mauritius, but cautioned him as to his future behaviour,
It is not likely now that any alteration will be made in the Queen’s title, owing to the coolness of the colonies about the matter,

Negotiations between the British and Russian Commissioners in reference to the Afghan boundary question are still proceeding here. It is reported to be making favorable progress towards settlement.

At the Victorian Racing Club’s Steeplechase Meeting yesterday, the Grand National Steeplechase was won by Royal Oak, with Promotion second, and Flashlight third. Ibe Grand National Hurdle Race was won by Yeoman, Friction second, and Darkness third.

Mr Drake’s horses—Spade Guinea, Pasha, Teddy Yuille, Rocket, and Vinaigrette—were landed in good order from the Wakatipu on Saturday. Brisbane, July 15.
Heavy rains have fallen in this colony. Serious floods are apprehended. At Nerang, to the south of this city, a fall of 1 Sin. has been recorded in twenty-four hours.
