Lord and Lady Brassey, willing to a gentleman in Auckland, state that they wili be unable to visit Tasmania and Now' Zealand this year, but hope to return to the colonies in a few .years’ time, when they will visit Auckland. Hearn’a challenge to scull for the championship of New Zealand for £IOO will probably be taken up by William Coplin Harwood, a man at present in Wellington. Harwood has,beena resident in the colony' (at Bank’s Peninsula) for ovq' - nine months, and is a man of fine physique. The plans for the restoration of the Wellington Post Office were approved on Wednesday, and the Government architect will call for tenders in about a month. The principal alterations will be carrying two partition walls through the buihliog and above the roof, and the establishment of a proper water service, which did not exist in the old building. There is a good deal of excitement over a piece of quartz brought into Ross from the William Tell tunne l , Cedar creek, West Coast; This stone weighs about 35 pounds and shows gold freely dotted all over it, which can easily be seen with the naked eye. Dr McGregor has decided that the circumstances under which Caswell, late a warder in the Auckland Asylum, was dismissed justify the action of Dr Cremnni, as Caswell was not able to do any work. Government have agreed to grant him four months’ salary as a settlement of the matter.
The Evening Press states that instructions have been issued to the railway authorities to call in all free passes held by members of the House of Representatives directly the dissolution of Parliament is gazetted.
