He might say that tbo statement that £lO would be sufficient,, ' 'to blfect a bridge tnui would answer the -j; purpose was a. mere fallacy/ He was perfectly convinc'd that a good track 1 -'gould be got around tlie terrace that would answer all purposes. The making of p Bucbi aitrapk would in- no way interfere : " with the owner of the land (Mr Wigky)
getting his stock to the water, , '* 1 • Air ‘Kelland said be had all along been 'in favor of the track. Floods—Ah we have had, throe t reshfcs, in as many weeks the rivor,cross-1 mgs and fords have been cut aboni, and in sotue places very much altered, entailing a large amount of labor to render them passable. No - : lions damage, however, has been done; Peckham'e Grossing—This crossing has given a good deal of trouble during the late floods to keep it;open for s coach -traffic. The river has cinaadewn on tlje south site and scoured out a .deep channel at the ford, making it unsafe to cross ’in a fresh. I am of opinion the best thing to do would', be to divert the stream above the present ford by erecting a bank iu the riverbed. ThL ought to bi carried, out at once, as lh» : next flood will ba sure to do .more' damage, as the rivor lias a great f ill at this ford. Redciiff —The slip at Redciiff "has alsoi required a largecaiqount of attention to"keep .the read open for traffic. T advertised the road as unsafe, being unable to divert the road without encroaching upon private lands. Th's will require id be attended to at once, or the ioa> will have to be closed for dray traffic. Kaku.hu River—This river has encroached considerably qn;Mr Sharp’s land, leaving ai gap at thpend of the stock bridge of about 60 feet'-Aiid "as the terrace is composed of silC* aod jV p‘if sand I sda 'nothing to prevent tho breach becoming much wider than at present. The.'river is also cutting into thu road above Mr Holland's house, and will, eventually catry.away the road. Orar.i Rivor —Tho Urafi is also encroaching,,up6n .tlie.ro-id above ilia bridge. I think adytsable to construct, a spar grom at thisplace/ JtCould ba made with the booms already bn the ground.
