A FAITHFUL DOG.

A touching incident was brought to light nt an inquest held at St. George s Hospital on the body of a cab driver named Alfred Stead, who died from accidental choking. Tho poor fellow was eating his dinner at Drayton Arms, Old Brompton, wheA a piece of moat lodged in his gullet. The potman at once rushed to the residence of a dozen medical men one after the other, but not ono was at home. The sufferer was then taken to the “Jubilee Hospital” in the Old Brompton Road, only to find that there was no doctor on the premises, It is not surprising that by tho time he was conveyed to St. George’s Hospital the poor man was dead. To tho hospital Stead was followed by his faithful terrier “ Jumbo,” who appears to be a well-known character amongst the London cab-drivers. When hia master’s body was placed in the surgery anteroom, Jumbo took possession of it, and defied the whole medical staff to come near. The question arose as to whether the faithful animal should be shot; but we are glad to hear his fidelity was not rewarded with a bullet. Recourse was had to stratagem, and by suddenly throwing a thick blanket over him the officials were able to move him to a cab, still moaning for his dead master, These authenticated facts add fresh testimony to the many previous instances of devotion on the psprt of man’s faithful friend, the
