Mr Samuel M.H.R., was yesterday presented with a numerously signed n qnisition, asking him to aland’ for the town ot New Plymouth. Mr Samuel said that aa the public desired it he consented to stand.
The Mayor of Wellington receiving a deputation urging the purchase of a steam fire engine threw cold water on the proposal. He thought the Council would have to provide for maintenance while the Insurance Companies, who weald benefit, contributed little or nothing. A request from another deputation for n site for a free library on the reclaimed land met with a similar response. The Southland News states that recording to private advices from London tho new shipping, firm, Tyser and Company, are backed by Rothschild, and are prepared to spend a quarter of a million in developing steam traffic between New Zealand and Europe,
A punt race for £SO a-side and the championship of the Northern Wairoa was rowed on Saturday last on the Northern Wairoa river, between A. White, of Mercury Bay (the champion), and H. Brown. White took the lead soon after the start and maintained it to the finish, winning by four lengths. In the Divorce Court, Wellington, on Wednesday, a decree niti was granted in the case of Nelson v. Nelson, the husband’s petition on the grounds of the wife’s adultery. In Norris v. Norris, the wife's petition on the grounds of desertion and adultery, a decree absolute was granted. Murphy and Arnus, formerly navvies, were arrested at Ahaura, West Const, and charged with several breaches of the Police Offences Act, and sentenced to four days’ imprisonment. They had also in* veigled a girl of about fifteen away from home, and had her with them for a few days. She was sent-back to her parents. On the coach arriving at Qreymouth with them the girl’s mother assaulted the male delinquents with her natural weapons. . The Westland Education Board have cut down the salaries of country teachers 10 per cent, and town teachers much more.
Two men, John Atkinson and John Hunter, were committed for trial at Dunedin on Wednesday for robbing and assaulting James Hand, The men had been drinking together, and when walking in the street the prosecutor was assaul'ed an d robbed of £5.
At the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, on Wednesday, Richard Goss, Joseph Benson, Richard Burns, John B*rrs, Wm. D. Marriott, Vincent Dentice, and Peter Harvey were charged with having on the 6th inat. unlawfully conspired to molest, Injure and obstruct Charles Edwards, an improver in the employment of Mr I. E. Potter, boot manufacturer, and with having followed him about in a disorderly manner and used violence towards him with a view to coerce him into quitting his employment. The evidence showed that prosecutor when leaving his work was set on by a crowd of about forty or fifty, who, after kaocking him down twice or three limes, carried him to the waters edge, and threats were made to throw him in, but a gentleman interfered. The whole of the defendants, with the exception of Dentioe, were committed for trial, bail being allowed. The Wellington shareholders in the N.Z, Shipping Company are still dissatisfied with the management and the continuance of certain practices which they consider costly and unremunerative.
