THE POPE’S JUBILEE.
The jubilee of Pope Leo XIII. will occur in December next, when he will have attained thi fiftieth year of hie priesthood; and, in celebration of that event, Bishop Luck, in the name of the Boman Catholic clergy and people of Auckland, will present to hjs Holiness a ooxtly and very handsome pedestal inlaid writing-table, constructed of New Zealand woods of picked specimens, and polished throughout. Pohutakawa, rimn, puriri, and kauri, mottled and figured, enter into the design, there being three specimens of the latter wood in the table. The side pannels are of mottled kauri, (those on the inner side of b e pedestals having a very beautiful shade tinea they were selected from the base of the tree), while the edgings are of rimu. Mottled kauri has also been need lor the draw fronts, of which there are ten, and these are bordered with "bird’s eye” kauri of a very flue grain, this wood having been used exclusively for the mountings of the smaller panels. The table top is mounted with two largo panels of pohutakawa, highly polished, the wood, whion posiessis perhaps the most perfect shade of any in tbs design, fiaviug been carefully selected, and present* ing a very effective appearance. A colorless p )iish has been peed in finishing thp work, and thus the natural tint of the wpofis has been pteittyed. Thp table i? a yery a 'Ustio piece of workmanship, and its production n fleets considerable credit upon Messrs Winks and Hall, who say that it is the most handsome they have yet designed, A silver
