Gentlemen, — I have the honor to report for the past month as follows Tenders wers invited fur shingling the Smiibfield road, and that of D. Angland accepted. The shingling on White’s road authorised to be done was let to the contractor for the work on Parke’s road, at Is par chain, hut owing to the wet weather I bad te stop Ibis work before it was quite completed. Tenders have been invited for cleaning drains on Middle Swamp and White’s roads, the owners and occupiers of adjoining land having consented to bear half the cast of same. Messrs Parke-and Woodley have consented to pay half the cost of tbs drain cleanihg applied for by them. This work has not been advertised, as 1 did not get their consent until after the advertisement had been in- : sailed. Specifications for the work have, r :however, been on the table, and probahlv tenders will be received to-day. The portion of the drain Mr Austin applied to have cleaned has bean done at a cost of 3s per chain. The late J, Connor’s contract, forming and shingling from Kakabu road to Hae-hae-te-moana river, has been completed by his widow, and a cheque drawn in her favor for the amount. Contract No 6, shingling part of road through Trevenna, has been completed. Rolleston’s read having been badly cut during the early part of the month I have had some shingle repairs done op it. It will probably s'and now until after winter, when a considerable part of it will require a coat of shingle. A decayed wooden culvert near the Mai.se properly having fallen in it has been replaced with 12-inch pipes. A 9-inch pipe culvert baa been put acroes the Eukahu road. Part of a concrete culvert on the Station road, Rangiiata, having fallen in it has been repaired. Be Mr MoNiven’e application : 1 have inspected this ford, and would recommend that a panel of post and rails be put in the gorse fence on the lower side of the road, and the ford lowered about Six inches. The cost of this would not exceed £3. Aa directed I have been over the road shown on 1 tbogrnpli plan of Reserve No. 1400, and am of opinion that the most . serviceable end to open would be that joining Rollestou’s road, otherwise a long detour wpold have to be made to get accese to Lot 8, Part B.—l hare, etc., * • ; P. AboHbb. 5 Id reference to that part of the report ■ relating to Education Reserve 1400, the ' Chairman said they had never received * : anything from that or the adjoining "native reserve, and as the road would only serve these properties, and had been - laid off by the Commissioners of Education for the sole benefit of their reaervas, he thought they ought to contiibute something towards making the road.— After some conversation tbeOveraeer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost .of the work required, and it was resolved —“ That the Commissioners of Education t« requested to contribute their ohare of the expense of opening this gold." It was also decided to act on the Overseer’a suggestions in re Mr McNiven’s application.
