John Stack was charged with drunkennssr, with res'sting the police, and with damaging a constable's uniform. For the first offence he was fined ss, and be was ordered to pay £2 18s fid for the damage dons to the arresting constable’s uniform. Jubilee Conobet.— A first rehearsal of the ohoruses to be given at the Queen's Jubilee concert at Temuka takes place to-morrow evening in the Volunteer Hall. The pieces chosen are “Oberon it. Fairy Land,” “The Carnivals,” and “ Oh, Who will o’er the Downs with Me,” and those ladies and gentlemen having copies of the music are requested to take the same with them. Mr W. G. Rutland is the conductor.

Walking Match. —Captain Cotton’s 24 hours* wa k with Joe Ssotl, at the Tuatn street Hall,Chrialchurch,was concluded at 10 o’clock last Saturday night. Cotton did 119 miles I lap, including ten miles handicap-allow-ance. Scott did 117 miles 6 lap>. The track was 23 laps to the miles. Cotton takes 75 per cent of the entrance money, which be gives to his corps, the Mounted Rifles. Both men seemed distressed at the finish. There was a large attendance during the day, and 2000 were present at the finish.

Otbrlain. -At Waimate on Saturday no inquest was held on the body of no infant child of Mr end MrsJ. M. Gilchrist. The jury returned a verdict of “accidental death, through being overlain,’ and added a rider that the parents should be censured for negligence. In addressing the parents at the conclusion of the inquest the Coroner (Mr Beswick) said that the death of their child lay m their own door, and they had barely escaped being commit led on a charge of manslaughter.

Maobi Ball.—The Maori ball held last night nr the Volunteer Htll, Temuka, was a great success. There were several people from Geraldine and other parts of the distriot present, and the room was crowded, there being as many sitting dawn as tnere were dancing. Tbe programme consisted of the usual dances, interspersed with songs sung by the Natives themsslvas, Maori war dances, sailor’s hornpipe (splendidly danced by a Waimate Maori boy), and other novelties. Dancing was kept up till a late hour, and ell enjoyed themselves to their heart’s content. Messrs Colville and Heap supplied the music, and it was all that could be desired. Licensing Mattkk*.—The Rayensbpume (Oiago) Licensing Committee have refused to renew the license of the only public house in Ravensbourne. The Kanieri Licensing Committee (West Coast), the majority of which are Good Templars, refused seven applications for renewal, two at Hanieri, two at Rimu, one at Kanieri Forks, one at Kokatahi, and one at ihe Three Mile. In the case of the last three, there is ao licensed bouse within miles. No reason is assigned for the action of the committee, and nip indication of the intention to close tbe houses had btsen .disolojed. The police reported favoU'ablv in i-abh Case.

Education.— A return was presented to the Council on Friday which shows that the cost of education to the colony is nearly £1 per head of the population!. The .groas expenditure fpr the year ending March Slst was £549,333, less credit for endowment and school fees of £40,295, having a balance of £509,038. The principal items are—Otago University expenditure £9645, recovered £1306 ■; New Zealand University £2990, £7931; Canterbury' 5 College £7316,i> £1379 ; Education Boards £412,075, £2500. The aggregate of office' expenses of all the Boards for the year were £10,695 Oi BdJ of teachers’salaries £290,794 Tsa 7d, of grants to Committees £29,104 6s 9d, of scholarship payments £5573 0s 9d. , : Kbw Zbaland Railways. The report on working railway* presented to Parliament bn Monday, showed that Mr Richardson and Mr Maxwell have effected substantial economies in that department, quite irrespective of the sum saved in working expense* through shortcomings in the traffic. The total length of hues open is 1727 miles, as agaiast 1621 th* year previous, of which 629 are in the North Island, and 1098 in the ftouth, 1030 of latter being the HurunuiBluff section. The railways are now being worked at grea'ly reduced cost both per mile and per cent, of revenue. During the current year the expenditure has been at the annual rats of £25 per mile less than last year, and has absorbed 4 per cent, less of receipts, the ratio of expenditure to revenue being 53 per cent, as against 57. During tb'e month of April the Greymonth coal line yielded revenue at the extraordinary rate of £4IOO per. annum. The total cost of opened lines is now £13,017,000, or including uK finished lines and harbor works £14,219,0C0 There has been a large recovery, in the grain traffic sines the beginning of tbs financial year, but a great falling off in shaop conveyed.

Thb “ Right S?ebch.’—Referring to the “ patriotic and appropriate speech delivered by the Duke of Cambridge at the banquet to the colonial delegates, the London correspondent of the Argus says ; —Happily, it was the ‘ right speech, which does not always happen to be the case with his Royal Highness, who attends % multiplicity of public dinners that he sometimes gets a little mixed in his orations. On one oacasion he was ie dine on a Monday with the officers ef ths Staff College, and on the Tuesday with the Fishmongers’ Company. Since 1881, when he was summoned to Europe, he has been engaged in miistonary labors in.
