At the Supreme Court, New Plymouth, on Thursday, Fredk. James Thomson was sentenced to ten years' penal servitude for forgery. He had been convicted before. Margaret Courtenay, for housebreaking, was sentenced to two years. The Dunedin unemployed have the offer of 4s 6d a day for work at Catliu's river. A free night school is to be established at Auckland. It is estimated that if the walla of the Wellington postoffice do not have to be pulled down the building may bo replaced for about £15,000, but it is almost certain some portion wil' have to be demolished. An ntlempt is to be made to pump out the Wuitaki and stop up the holes in order to float her. Messrs Littlejohn and Son, who constructed the Post Office clock at Wellington, have inspected the remains of the works and bells, and found them hopelessly twisted and fused together. The four bells weighed a ton and a half ; and the beat which melted them must have been of the greatest intensity. [t is suggested some of the Jubilee subscriptions should be devoted to obtaining another clock.
