THE IMPERIAL CONFERENCE.

London, April 26. At to-day’s meeting of the imperial Conference the Heir [Hebrides question was discussed. The'Marquis .of Sa'is* bury made a ■ statement announcing the policy of the Imperial Government with reference to these islands. Mr Deakin, of Victoria,' regarded the policy as unsatisfactory, and protested against its being carried out. Sir F. D. Bell, of New Zealand, expressed himself satisfied with the Imperial policy. It was announced tb|at the diplomatic negotiations between the British and French Governments relative to the New Hebrides were still proceeding. At the afternoon sitting the Samoan question was dissussed, when Sir F. D., Bell’s proposals met with approval. Sir fl. Holland expressed a hope that a joint agreement would be arrived ,at between England, Germany, and the United States regarding the administration of the islands, and announced that .the Samoan question would be referred to a conference of delegates from those Powers, to be held in Wellington. April 27. At this morning’s meeting ;of the Imperial Conference the subject pf telegraphic communication between the different parts of the Empire was discussed. In the afternoon thei discussion of the postal service was resumed. Mr Henntcker Heaton submitted his scheme for a universal penny postage. He expected that* an eight years’ contract for the carriage of the Australian mails would be signed at an early date.'
