The Jubilee at Temuka.—A public, meeting will he held in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, next Thursday evening, to take steps for the celebration of the Queen’s jubilee in Temuka. Football.-— A match between the Ttmuka and Winchester Clubs takes place to-day on the ground of the latter. An express will leave Temuka at a quarter past one o’clock. Thb.Wakanui Libbl Case.— The Wabu nui libel case, Gibson v. Wilson, claim £2OOO, was concluded at the Supreme Court Timaru, yesterday. A verdict was given for the plaintiff for one farthing. Costs were refused. The case lasted a week. Hoad Board Election. —Ratepayers are reminded that candidates for the vacant seats on the Mount Peel and Temuka Road Boards close with the respective Returning Officers (Mr Bobt. Irvine, Peel Forest, and Mr Win. Wills, Tenauka), at noon on Monday next. The Jobilbb at Gbbaldinb.—A public meeting to receive the report of the Committee appointed to consider suggestions as to the best method of celebrating Her Majesty’s Jubilee in Geraldine, will be held in the Town Board Office, Geraldine, on Wednesday next. Pkimitxtb Methodist Church, Tbmdxa. —An advertisement in another column announces that a love feast, conducted by Mr J. Hilton, of Timaru, will be held in the above Church to-morrow evening, and prayer meetings will be held in the same Church every night next week.

Moetgaob on Perpetual Leaseholds. —An important decision was given by Mr Justice Ward at New Plymouth on Friday in banco. The case in which the right of lessees under perpetual leases to mortgage their leaseholds without; the consent of the Land Board came on for argument, being in the form of an appeal from the decision of the District Land Registrar. Mr Samuel,, for appellant, cited oases in support of his contention—that Government were wrong in their claim to prevent such mortgages. Mr Standish, Crown Solicitor, supported the contention of the Crown Lands offices in Wellington. His Honor decided in favor of Mr Samuel’s contention, and allowed the appeal, with costa, against the Government. R.M. Court, Tbjcuka. —At the above Court yesterday, before K. F. Gray, Esq., J.P., William Wilson was charged—lst, with being drunk and disorderly; 2nd, with damaging private property to the value of 12s, viz., breaking a pane of glass in Mr Barr’s shop window; and 3rd, with using obscene language in a public street. Loaded dice and marked cards were found on him. Mr Barr gave evidence as to the damage done to bis window. Defendant was fined £2, and ordered ta pay the 12s damage to the glass, and the gambling cards and dice found in his possession were forfeited. In default of payment of fine and damage to be imprisoned at Timaru for 48 hours. The accused having only 2e Id in money be had to take it out. N.Z. Butxhb.—Mr F, Train, general storekeeper, of Peilding, has just returned from Sydney, where be has been endeavouring to open a market for butter. He says that butter is being sent to Sydney from all parts. New Zealand butter has a bad name on account of the slovenly state in which it is placed upon the market. He noticed a splendid parcel of butter whilst there, which had been sent from the Opunake butter factory, but it only.f etched 7d per pound at auction. The same was afterwards retailed at IBd per pound. Mr Train, says the Bangitikei Advocate, managed to sell a parcel of butter, which he took with him, direct to the retailers, and got lOd per pound tor it.

Pbbsokali. —The Geraldine Public School is about to suffer another loss by the departure of its second master, Mr A. Erskine, for Masterton, where he has obtained the appointment of assistant master in the public school. Mr Easkine has long been connected with the Geraldine school, having steadily worked his way from the infant class as a pupil' to the position he now holds in the school. He has always taken a keen interest in the welfare of hie pupils. In the playground he has encouraged them in all manly sports, and has also brought them to a good state of efficiency in drill. He will be much missed in the township, having identified himself for many years past with various musical bodies. A Mibvobtukb. —A rather serious misfortune happened to a resident of Arowhenua, Mr Bagu Williams, on Thursday morning last, about 8 o’clock, when his house collapsed just, as the family ware sitting down to breakfast. The bouse was a new one, built of sods, with a thatch roof, and the family had only been living in it a few days. On the previous day Mr Williams had placed a quantity of cob on the apex of the roof, and the ties were insufficient to bear the additional weight, the consequence being that they gave way, and the roof fell in and the walla out. Twelve persons were in the house when it began to fall, but all got out with the exception of two—Mrs Williams, who was aaught when near the door, and a little girl of 14 years, who was caught in one of the corners. Happily both were unhurt. Much sympathy is expressed for Mr Williams, to whom the accident is a serious loss.
