THE CABLE RATES.

Melbournb, April 14. It has transpired that after the termination of the recent controversy with regard to the cable rates between Australia and New Zealand, Mr Perham, Postmaster-General, replying to a communication from Sir Julius Vogel, suggested a conference of PostmastersGeneral of the colonies interested should be held in Melbourne or Sydney, wbichfvertmigh be most convenient to the New Zealand Government, in order that the whole matter should be reopened and thoroughly discussed. Sjr Julius Yogel, replying on 25th March, concurred with Mr Derbam's proposal, suggesting that as the, N«w Zealand Parliament was about to meet it would be better for the conference to be held at the end of the present year. Mr Derham, therefore, decided tbat the Cabinet should sanction bis proposal and endeavor to arrange a conference. The date and place of meeting has not yet been decided. The contention of the Victorian PostmasterGeneral is that the New Zealand rates are inequitable, the' burden of charges falling on Australia in general, Victoria in particular'.
