REJECTED TENDERS.

TO THB BDITOE. Sib, —Id justice to other ratepayers on this river I ask you to insert a few words in your paper concerning a little mietake that our present members of the Geraldine Road Board made at their last meeting. There was a piece of land vested in the Board to be let, the rent of which van to be spenl in protective works on tho river. Tenders were, called for the lease of it for five years. There were four tenderers in for it, and instead of accepting the highest tender they gave it to the second highest, thinkingthe tenderer would be the mostlikaly man to protect the bank of the river. Now, in people's opinion that live near thb river the selected tenant has shown his unfitness for the position by the fact that he does not protect his own river frontage. The worst floods we have had have come in over his river frontage, and from there through four different men's land. The Board got a few banks put up about three years ago in different places, and one of them was put on this man's land to keep back the overflow, but he is letting his pigs and other things destroy this bank 1 It is on y made, of riverbed shingle, and not according to specification at all, which ptovided that there should be Ift. cf soil at least to cover the shingle and sown with grußa. The other settlers haviog river fron'ago have all protected their land, beside" preserving the b*nka that the Board pnt up. So, I think, Mr Editor, the Board mado a nvstake in not getting some practical knowledge before accepting the said tender, as, 1 bolieva, they were told to be very careful whom they let the section to. Of course, we are on|y poor working men on this Flat, ao we are not supposed to know anything about the powers that be, but, I think I

if they were letting their own private estate they would more than likely accept the hiehest tender. Bat, of course, this being public estate, they can afford to be liberal, especially as the election is draw* ing near.-—lam, etc., John Hansen. Belfiald, April 14, 1887.
