March, Ladies “ fortunate enough ” to give birth to twins daring the month will be presented with twc-guinea bassinettes ; ladies who marry second, husbands daring the month (except bigamously) will receive sewing machines, anil ladies who have been married within the last twelve months becoming widowed during tbe month will be consoled by wringing and mangling machines—all very fine, no doubt. , The last offer is tbe most tempting, and hardly gives husbands a fair chance,
Alfred Smith, aged 16 years, was indicted at tbe Liverpool Assizes for the wilful murder of Maud Hamilton, aged .17, his sweetheart, at Southport. Tbe young couple bad a quarrel, and locked themselves up in separate rooms, A pistol shot was beard, and Smith, running to a neighboring doctor’s, said be had shot the girl, who was subsequently found with a wound in the breast. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter, and be was sentenced to six months’ bard labor. The Great Eastern steamer has been sold by auction in Liverpool, Tbe auctioneer stated that she was last sold for £16,000, and since then had been on exhibition and that something like £20,00) had thne been “netted,” During the past twelve months she bad been thoroughly overhauled, and had now a Board nf Trade certificate of seaworthiness. A laborer naale"Martin Doyle,, residing in Dublin, has. committed suicide in a most extraordinary manner, cutting and stabbing bis bead, chest, arms, legs, and other parts with pieces of broken glaes and tenpnnny nails. The femoral artery was divided, and twenty wounds inflicted on bis head. Altogether over thirty wounds, several mortal, were on. the body. Be and his brother, both single men, lived together. At .dinner there was nothing unusual in. his manner.. The brother left him at home, and returning about seven found him as described. Be died at nine o’clock. The deceased was temperate, but moody and despondent, and it is believed that be suffered from religious mania. At Bawardeu Church recently the marriage of Jane Elisabeth Forsyth, for eighteen years in the service of Mrs Gladstone, to John Howlands, vestry clerk, was celebrated. Mr W. 11. .Gladstone, presided at the organ, and the marriage service, which was fall choral, was performed by the Rev. Stephen Gladstone. Mr and Mrs Gladstone were both present and signed the register. Mr Gladstone provided the wedding breakfast at the Csitle,
